The million-dollar question
Have you ever been asked the ‘million-dollar question’? It goes like this – Are you happy? That’s it. It is the million-dollar question because it is the answer to everything. Ultimately you just want to be happy. So, are you happy? Why, then, do you put so many obligations in your way? Without meeting you I can’t know for sure but I can tell you that you’re likely making the things you desire your requirements for happiness. Does this look familiar?
• More money • Better body • Happier relationship • More Facebook friends • Bigger house • More time off • Better job • Nicer car • And the list goes on…
These won’t create happiness but I am willing to bet you’ve made them your requirements for happiness. Instead of sitting back and just asking, “At this very moment am I happy?” If the answer is yes, that’s great! If the answer is no ask yourself, “Why not?” And you will know. It’s that simple.
Instead you chase the checklist above but have you ever experienced getting something off your list and the surge in joy was fleeting? This is the most common experience and it leads us to think, “Maybe I just didn’t set my sights high enough!” And just like that you’re on to the next item on your checklist.
Really think about it – what is happiness for YOU? What actually brings joy to your life? I will take a guess it looks like this:
• Family • Friendships • Gratitude • Giving Back • Laughter • Community • Conviction
This is the inner journey and it is the only one that can point you toward happiness. Don’t chase the goal, chase the feeling. If you haven’t seen the documentary film, “Happy” I highly recommend checking it out.
So, are you happy?
