How to change the conversation
How to change the conversation

"Once you willingly embrace that seemingly broken part - you become whole." - Tosha Silver

This quote found me yesterday as I was reading 'Change Me Prayers' (read it!) It hit on a question I've been pondering for awhile now - is it time for a different therapeutic conversation? And I think the answer is YES.

Just the other day my wife and I were perusing a bookstore and per usual I found myself browsing the 'self-help' section when something blatantly caught my attention. The section title on the top of the bookshelf no longer read 'Self-Help' and in its place was this - 'Living Your Best Life'. I did my best not to jump up and down in the aisle but I was really excited about this! So the conversation has already begun to shift.

Shift how? From a conversation about how broken you are to a conversation about how divinely human you are.Now it isn't as simple as speaking affirmations, praying, or embracing your strengths. All awesome practices but they forego looking at your roots or your personal truths.

I strongly feel we need something in the middle. We need something between embracing our traumas and cultivating our passion. We need something that blends understanding our past and simply moving forward.

We can't forget where we come from because it is quite literally how you see the world.

We can't just move on expecting things to magically be different.

Where is the middle ground? How do we do both/and? How do you give respect to where you come from and let yourself dream about where you want to go? How do you keep one from defining the other?

The traditional therapeutic conversation has one BIG wall - it assumes you're broken and need to be fixed.

The traditional coaching conversation has one BIG wall - it pretends you were born today and just want to move forward.

You can't live in the past. You can't just magically live a completely different life.

SO if you want to change your life, stretch your comfort zone, take a leap, heal, dream, or forgive - Where do you turn?

I don't actually have an answer for you. I more or less am just starting to ask this question myself. I bring this up because as I lean into the fullness of my work I'm seeing some pretty strong themes. I get to see the most incredible strengths in my clients and I get to be there to hold space when things are hard. It's an honor and it begs that the conversation support what's really needed.

Here's what I have so far...

  • You want a healthy, intentional, conscious, loving, and accepting relationship with your SELF.
  • You want to understand, heal from, and release any story, fear, resentment, or unresolved part of your life. You may never forget, and you don't need to, but you want to learn and bring your lessons to your life to serve your highest good.
  • You want clarity and direction around what it is you DO want for your life and to trust in yourself to make it happen.
  • You want to grant yourself permission to understand, try on, and play with the pieces of yourself you've kept hidden or quiet.
  • You're willing to practice vulnerability but it's a bit scary and you aren't sure how to stay safe in turning toward the more vulnerable parts of your life.
  • At the end of the day you want to be happy. You don't necessarily want to be defined by your wounds and you don't always want to strive for improvement.
  • You get that life is a constant ebb and flow and you want to move with the natural flow of your life. You see that it can't always be perfect and at the same time it doesn't need to hurt.

What do you think about this list? Doing the work and examining your life is SO fulfilling. I wish this for everyone. I mean a real, raw examination of your beliefs, your fears, your desires, your losses, and your plans. And I beg that you don't go through this alone.

I believe now after 5 years as a coach, hundreds of hours of education, and almost 1,000 hours of conversations with my clients this I know to be true - you want to be seen, heard, understood, and above all else, LOVED.

You want to know you matter.

You want to do the work and sometimes you want to quit. I honor both because it's all part of the process!

I believe this is what is really means to answer your calling. It means to let all the contents of your life spill out before you. To keep what you love, to release what you don't, to trust and have faith in yourself, and to really explore why you're here. Explore who you are and what you are. Step into the pieces of you that terrify you AND inspire you at the same time.

This I can promise - when you do, you will literally be AH-mazed by life.

Changing this conversation can't just be done as your coach - it's a co-created experience. I invite you to help me change the conversation. I've put together a very short survey and I would LOVE and greatly appreciate your insight. Click the link below and let's do this!

I want you to be brave...
answer your calling part two
answer your calling part two

When I shared the first part in this series on answering your call I promised to share 5 reasons to answer you call today. Well, I have something even better for you. And it has to do with you being brave. Remember on Monday I pointed out that answering your call means the following?

  • Moving WAY out of your comfort zone
  • Accepting that your calling won’t fit into your life as it is now
  • Challenging what you know to be absolute about who you are

It's no wonder answering your call requires...bravery. Today I'll share a few stories of this kind of bravery. My hope is that these stories will act as little nudges to help you turn toward and even answer your calling.

One is about someone I haven't actually met but admire her conviction. One is about a client who's given me permission to share his story. And one is about me and what happened when I answered my calling.

"Maybe there's a way out of the cage where you live Maybe one of these days you can let the light in Show me how big your brave is

Say what you wanna say And let the words fall out Honestly I wanna see you be brave With what you want to say And let the words fall out Honestly I wanna see you be brave"

-Sara Bareilles

There is a woman who answered her calling and it put her on a quest that challenged her entire life. Her name is Elizabeth Gilbert. You may know her from her book, Eat Pray Love or her Super Soul Sunday appearance. You might have a very strong opinion about her journey, her book, or her message. No matter your thoughts put them down for a moment and let's look at the bones of what she did.

She felt something deep within her life that just wasn't right. She hand picked her entire life, she was present for every decision. Her work, her marriage, and her dreams. Yet one night, walking around her home in the dark, she just knew it was all wrong. She didn't know what was right just yet. It's easier to feel what's out of place because we haven't made space yet for what fits better.

Then did something even she couldn't believe - she turned toward her calling and let it fill in the blanks. Although terrified she left her marriage, left her home, and left her life as she knew it to embark on a year-long journey around the world. And she found the life that was perfectly designed for her.

There are always reasons to deny your call. Learn what's calling you, leave the rest to the Universe.

There is a man who is answering his calling one day at a time and he's finding each day to fit just a little more perfectly. This is the story of a client of mine. I'll call him John. When John first came to work with me he was in over his head. He had embarked on a business that felt right at the time but slowly it stopped fitting who he was. He wanted so badly to take care of everyone in his life that he never turned toward himself and what it was he really wanted. Until it started to make him feel lost, sad, and sick. Answering your calling will feel oddly effortless.

John slowly started to peel back the layers of his ideal life and where he wasn't living in conjunction with his vision. It turned out what he really wants is to be motivational speaker. Opportunities were already knocking on his door (yes, this does sometimes happen) and he was turning them down out of fear that it would rock his current life too much.

Answering your calling will pull you in a direction you are not already headed. Just talking about sharing his story lit him up. The tipping point is when not answering your calling is more painful than just doing it. John let go of who he thought he was so that who he is could show him the way. In the end it wasn't as scary as he anticipated. In fact, it's the easiest path he's ever navigated.

"We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us." - Joseph Campbell

This last story is about a woman who didn't know she had a calling until it knocked her sideways. This is my story. I've shared bits and pieces here and here. Today I'll give you a short summary that has taken me more than a year to comprehend. Sometimes you have to go with the flow, ask questions later. I had two wake up calls 6 months apart to the day. The first a spiritual breakdown, the second a life breakthrough. The thing is, I was pretty content before my calling came knocking on my door.

My life was good. Good job, good friends, good relationship. All things happy in their place. Sure I had questions and quiet wonderings about what life was really about. Was there a purpose I wasn't fulfilling? Why am I here? What is the point? Until you answer your calling these questions are crazy making. After you answer your calling these questions are irrelevant.

I've always known I was intuitive and had a natural gift for hearing and healing people. When I see people hurting I can't help but go to them. Then on January 8th, 2014 it all came full circle when God tapped me on the back. Growing up atheist this was a bit...alarming. It sent me into a spiral of questions, books, mentors, guides, and late night journal writing. Turning toward your calling will have you questioning so much. Let the questions come - just don't get hung up on the answers.

This wake-up call set me up for my second calling when I realized I wasn't working on purpose. After God said hello I knew I was meant to help others lean into their higher selves, reconnect with their soul, and let go of their fears. Answering your calling brings a sharp amount of clarity we can spend our whole lives searching for. Just like that...there it is.

It would be another eight months before I was ready to really own this. Well, I'm still working on it. Each day I ease a little more into my calling. It's still scary. Here's the thing about self-enlightenment - once you see and feel the light, going back into the dark feels like dying. Even when scared, uncertain, or lost I keep going because it fits perfectly.

So yes, I want YOU to be brave.

There is no greater purpose for you than to answer your calling.

That silent tug on your heart?

Tune into it.

Listen to what it has for you.

Ask what it knows.

Set down your need to know it all, for a comfortable answer, or for the pieces to all fit together. They simple won't.

What do you have to lose? The better question is - what are you already losing by not answering your calling?

In light and love,

Andrea

Answer your Calling - Part One
answer your calling part one
answer your calling part one

Last year I answered a calling. You can read my favorite post about it here. Does everyone have one? Should you answer your calling? The answer to these questions is 'Yes!' So maybe the more important questions are - what is a calling? How will I know when it's beckoning me? Today I'll answer these questions using my own experience AND later this week I'll share 5 Reasons to Answer the Call. There is one constant when you hear your calling - it just might terrify you. Ok, there's no might about. It will scare you. My hope is that this article will ease that just enough that you feel inspired to turn toward this incredible experience.

Your calling may have nothing to do with your work - this is important to point out because I think this can be confusing. As my dear friend and coach Michael Knouse recently said to me over coffee, "Your calling is this great offering you bring to the world. And that offering should never be ignored no matter the way it shows up."

Let's begin with this question - What is a calling?

I'm going to answer this the absolute best I can. This is based on my own experience, the experiences of my clients, and that every spiritual text says the same thing about your calling. We ALL have a calling. Think of it as this truth embedded in the DNA of your soul. When it gets turned on you're called to something in your life that if followed will lead you to the highest version you can live of your life.

This calling can be many things. Here are a few examples:

  • More purposeful work
  • To become a parent
  • To move or travel
  • To start a non-profit
  • To write
  • To paint
  • To play music
  • To climb a mountain
  • To find God
  • To adopt
  • To forgive
  • And the list goes on...

Your calling is already there - are you listening for it?

How will I know when it's beckoning me?

In my experience you just know. It's an unspoken thing you can feel in your gut. It's a sense that you're missing out on something big in your life. Oh, and it probably sounds terrifying to bring into the light. Clients often say to me, "How do I know what my calling is?" And I always answer with this, "I know you know what it is. The better question is, what are you afraid of by turning toward it?"

It isn't likely that you just don't know. You know. It's the idea of actually doing something about your calling that is very scary. Of course it's scary! Answering your call means...

  • Moving WAY out of your comfort zone
  • Accepting that your calling won't fit into your life as it is now
  • Challenging what you know to be absolute about who you are

12 Reasons why YOU matter
12 Reasons why you matter
12 Reasons why you matter

Of all the things I can do more my clients the #1 most effective tool I have is also the most simple. It's to remind you that you matter. Did you know this? If not let me tell you - of course you matter! More than you can possibly imagine. So why is it that so many are living as though they never mattered less? I invite you to take this post to heart today. Share it. Re-post is. Send it to those you love. Get on the 'I Matter!' bandwagon.

I can take TWO approaches to my work. One is to find out all the things that are going horribly. The OTHER is to remind you of all your strength and your core Self. I'm sad to admit this - the former can be easier. We all live in a 'woundology' culture. We all have PhD's in our wounds. We are the first to remind those we meet, those we've known forever, and those in between about everything we've endured in our life.

We relate based on our wounds and we connect through similar wound stories. What is a wound? Any trauma. All trauma. Accidents, breakups, abandonment, phobias, loss, grief, and fear. Now I have to say this - your wounds are valid. They happened and they're part of your story. Not because you endured them but because you learned something and you grew!

The problem is when we choose our wounds to guard, inhibit, or protect over us prohibiting our life from thriving and flourishing!

I have never worked with a client who wasn't using a wound to stay trapped. I've done the same thing. These stories are our comfort and although they are painful and awful to keep around we stop knowing how to be without them defining our life.

So stop trying to forget them, let them go, or abandon their memory. They thrive on the energy and attention you give them. They stay alive to the extent you keep them alive. The solution? Turn toward your light.

Struggle is inevitable. Suffering is a choice. Do MORE of the things that remind you how much you matter and LESS of the things that keep you in pain. Yes, it is really this simple.

To help you do this I want to gift you 12 Reasons Why YOU Matter. These are based on my own life and my experiences. Please change or edit them to fit you perfectly. You know your strengths. Are you using them? It doesn't take any more energy to live through your awesomeness than it does your wounds. Only you can make this choice.

12 Reasons Why You Matter

I don't provide explanations because they really are this simple. All they require is acceptance.

Reason #1: You exist

Reason #2: You are here for a reason

Reason #3: You are love

Reason #4: You are part of the Whole

Reason #5: You are divine

Reason #6: You are energy

Reason #7: You are connected

Reason #8: You are wise

Reason #9: You have the truth

Reason #10: You are compassion

Reason #11: You're needed

Reason #12: You wanted to be here

My hope is that these 12 Reasons inspire you just enough that you see things differently today. Start there. Tomorrow when you wake up you can continue on the same path OR you can re-read these 12 Reasons....

In light and love,

Andrea

3 Simple Ways to Tune into your Intuition
3 simple ways to tune into your intuition
3 simple ways to tune into your intuition

As an intuitive I forget that tuning into your intuition isn't a given for everyone. Let me preface this by saying we are ALL intuitive. It's up to you how much you want to use your intuition, strengthen it, or rely on it. Today I offer you 3 Simple Ways to Tune into your Intuition. I'm starting here because before you can use it for all it's good for you need to see that it does in fact exist! What can you use your intuition for? Think of your intuition as your own internal navigation system. Like a GPS for your life. You can take your biggest questions and your biggest fears to your intuition and it will navigate the way. Now I must say this - your intuition works every single time whether you like the answers or not. It's power is in how much you trust it and take its guidance to heart.

It's not uncommon to ask your intuition for guidance and find doubt immediately seep in. Why? Because we humans LOVE concreteness. We've wired together concreteness with what you can see, hear, smell, taste, and touch. But what about what you can sense and feel? Where do these fit in?

This sixth sense is not as rational as the others so it's easy to disregard its truth. But I assure you - it's the most powerful tool you have at your disposal every single day. Why? Because you don't have to DO anything or GO anywhere. All you have to do is stop, tune in, and listen.

"Intuition is seeing with the soul." - Dean Koontz

Try each of these tools. One will work better for you than another. I personally like to use my journal and meditation for dialoguing with my intuition. My intuition always knows the most perfect path for me to take. Sometimes that path is messy and challenges me but this is part of life! As I mentioned before - you may not always love what your intuition has to say but this is ok. Listen anyway!

Journal with your intuition

One of my all time favorite journal techniques is to write a dialogue between myself and my intuition. It's really simple and always yields incredible results. Trust the process on this one. You start by writing a question for your intuition. Then write from your intuition's point of view - be your intuition's interpreter. Don't be surprised how well this technique works. You'll re-read your intuition's answers and find that you don't really recall writing that!

Tune into your gut feelings

Have you ever heard someone say, "I had a gut feeling"? The most common physical reaction to your intuition is in your gut. You may also feel your pulse quicken, your palms get sweaty, or lots of energy all of a sudden. This is because your intuition or 'gut reaction' can kick off a flight or fight reaction. These are all a byproduct of that reaction. What's responsible for this surge of sensation? Your adrenal gland is and it lives just above your kidneys. You literally get a 'gut feeling'. Tune into this! See how often over the next week your intuition signals go off.

Meditate

One of my most popular mediations I walk clients through is the Future Self-Meditation. Taught to me in my coach training this meditation can bring you a surge of answers and clarity by bringing you face-to-face with your future self for a conversation. You can buy this meditation here or you can book a Complimentary Power Chat and I'll personally walk you through a future-self mediation and an in-depth debrief.

Give your intuition the space to be! I think you'll be amazed at what it has to offer. I use my intuition everyday for decision making, business, relationships, and prosperity. Where should I take a leap? When do I need to tune back into my needs? We are all equipped with this internal wise-self. Enjoy the wisdom at your fingertips!

What does it really mean to 'play big'?
What does it mean to play big
What does it mean to play big

This month has been full of incredible conversations with entrepreneurs and business visionaries. Last week's post on bringing more love into your work was by far the most talked about - thank you for reading and sharing! Today we wrap up Conscious Living for Mindful Entrepreneurs month by talking about what it really means to 'play big'.  Also - if you missed last week's free call I've included the recording at the end of this article - please enjoy! It was a powerful hour and I'm so grateful to each of you who showed up.

I must give credit to the term 'play big' to Tara Mohr. Her most recent book helps women, specifically, peel back what it means to play big in their lives and work. Man or woman, I highly recommend this book.

I bring this to your attention as we wrap up this mindful month because it's an excellent question. Whether you're aware of it or not, as an entrepreneur the name of the game is 'play big.' Right? What if 'Playing Big' was not at all what you thought it would be? Let me explain...

What if playing big didn't mean trying to be larger than life but actually meant answering the call?

We are called to do something big here on Earth. The call is built into your DNA and there comes a time in your life when it rings you up. It grabs your attention after which you're never the same. Let me share a little about how the call works.

It isn't always the most obvious. It might be a subtle sensation in the pit of your stomach that tells you it's time to take a leap. That leap could be a million things - quit your job, move across the country, be a parent, volunteer, even question your beliefs. Once you get the call doubt inevitably follows. And a if you're brave to turn toward this doubt you'll find faith.

Although you have faith on your side you also have fear. That fear says things like,

"Why me?"

"How?"

"Will I be taken care of?"

"What if this doesn't work out?"

If you've ever found yourself in the midst of a call you know exactly what I'm talking about. Answering your call requires faith and unwavering belief in possibility.

When I answered my call I felt like I was wandering around in the dark for months with no clear path to take me back into my comfort zone. I was patient because although I was uncertain I knew I was heading toward something greater than I could possibly imagine. And this was well worth being patient for. What I didn't know at the time was this was the biggest I had ever played in my life. All I could do was tune in and trust.

What does this have to do with Mindful Entrepreneurship? Everything. What if you're ignoring your call? What if you're working with passion but not purpose? Who we are in life is who we are in business. Spending your energy ignoring what you're called to do is an invitation to play small in your life. And you're entrepreneur to play big!

For those who know their calling - if it's got your attention and you aren't sure what comes next I want to gift you something I wish someone had shared with me. What happens after you answer your call?

Things fall into place

They may not at first and you will need to stay open and ready but things will start to find their flow. A kind of rhythm that never exhausts you. It keeps on fueling you.

Opportunities reveal themselves

Remember this - all of life is a 'do with' process meaning you still have to show up and take action. Opportunities will start to reveal themselves. So many that you will get to choose where you want to show up. You can ask for what you need and know that your need will be met if you recognize it and lean into it.

Your heart fills up

Get ready to work with so much love! Love for those you serve, love for the work you create, and love for the whole process. Don't be surprised if you wake up every morning with gratitude brimming over your heart. It can be overwhelming in the best sense of the word.

Money is abundant

I need to preface this by saying that money isn't going to fall from the sky but opportunities will. Those opportunities  will lead to abundance if you allow them. If you aren't answering your call because you are worried there won't be enough money remember this: you can not live your purpose and be poor. It isn't how the universe works. You are only truly poor when you choose to ignore your calling and the work you do instead never feels like it provides enough. And you're right, it won't.

You serve your highest possible reason for being here

Period. There is no greater gift you can give the world than to answer your call.

I don't know much for sure but this I know...life is short AND full. Don't waste a moment of this precious opportunity not doing the things that light you up and help you see how incredible this place actually is.

THANK YOU for joining me for this inspired month. I've loved every word I got to write here and all the conversations that have happened as a result. Again if you missed last week's free call on Conscious Living for Mindful Entrepreneurs then listen to it here:

The #1 Ingredient Your Business Needs MORE Of
THE ONE INGREDIENT YOUR BIZ NEEDS MORE OF
THE ONE INGREDIENT YOUR BIZ NEEDS MORE OF

As we continue

Conscious Living for Mindful Entrepreneurs Month

today I want to share what I believe is the #1 ingredient you need MORE of in your business. And I think it might surprise you a little. Ok, a lot.

Have you ever been told, "It's not personal, it's business" or, "Take your heart off the table"? Me too. I've even worked with mentors who insisted I keep my heart in a box when it came to my business.

It was always well-intended and yet I now think this advice is the most mis-used approach to helping you be a successful entrepreneur. I'll share a few myths in a moment that I believe are where these suggestions come from.

Does your work mean something to you? Does it mean something to the people you help? And does it mean something to your community? Then it's incredibly personal. Part of Conscious Living for Mindful Entrepreneurs is Conscious Commerce. We need more socially responsible businesses, yes, but this isn't what I'm referring to.

When I say Conscious Commerce I mean HEART-centric companies that provide solutions that come through their heart center. When you look at business through your Chakras then you'd see that your divine purpose and your ability to manifest it meet in the heart chakra - right in the center of your chest. Your most vulnerable and courageous place to act from.

What's the #1 ingredient your business needs MORE of?

Love

The whole purpose of life is to enjoy BEING here - not FEARing here.

And every entrepreneur I've coached was running their business with more fear than faith. Fear that the money would run out. Fear that the customers would leave. Fear that when one door closed another would not open.

Fear can not and will not ever produce an inspired business. It will create something you have to constantly hustle for. It makes you put your heart in the box and work for the bottom line rather than your highest possible purpose here on Earth - to share your vision and your gifts with the world.

When you work from love and with love you reach into people's lives and inspire them from within

I invite you to make your work one of the most personal things you do with your energy. Now - let me clear up some myths about making business a matter of the heart.

Myth #1: If I make business personal I'll be broke

Do you believe if you worked through your heart and not your head you'd be poor? Do you believe you'd end up giving your services away for free or try and make everyone happy costing you? I used to believe this too. There is no higher purpose than to serve from your heart. Giving your work away for free isn't a heart-decision, it's a poor self-worth decision. Your highest self knows how worthy you are. Your heart will show you the way. Abundance isn't an act of power - it's an act of your higher self connecting with the world through your purpose. True abundance doesn't always come with a dollar sign attached.

Myth #2: If I make business personal I'll be open to criticism

I discovered something magical about using love as my anchor - there is no higher vibration than love. When you vibrate with love your work matches that vibration. This means lower vibrations like fear, anger, or ridicule won't reach you. Any criticism you receive isn't because your heart's in it - it's because you have something unresolved within yourself that has called this critique forward for you to let go of. And the only way to let it go is to listen to your heart.

Myth #3: If I make business personal I'll make poor decisions

Leading with love doesn't make you vulnerable to poor decisions - self-doubt does. Self-doubt is the only thing that can cause you to stumble over your business decisions and self-doubt is born out of fear, not love. When you lead with your heart you make the most rooted decisions and they are the only ones that will manifest the return on investment you seek.

If these are the myths of working with heart and love, what are the truths?

Truth - Working with heart will squash fear, doubt, and confusion

Truth - Working with love will plant authentic roots and call in abundance in ALL areas of your life

Truth - Working with heart ensures you are creating for connection and to serve

Truth - Working with love will build a business of the highest self

Truth - Working with heart means working with faith, belief, and trust in your path

In light and love,

Andrea

The best kept secret to life
BEST KEPT SECRET TO LIFE
BEST KEPT SECRET TO LIFE

People come to work with me for 3 BIG reasons - they want more of something in their life. They want more fulfillment, more groundedness (not technically a word, but you want more of it right?), and more joy. Some want ALL 3. Don't you want more of these things in your life? Well...there's a secret to achieving these. Before I tell you what it is I want to share a story with you.

I want to introduce you to someone dear to me - we'll call her Ally - and I'm willing to bet you have something major in common with her.

She, like so many, was simply unfulfilled. She wasn't unhappy, she just wasn't living the life she'd imagined for herself. She had a good job, it wasn't her dream job but it paid the bills and she didn't have to worry. She had nice hobbies and spent enough time taking care of her health. She was in a healthy relationship. She felt it was a bit predictable but she felt loved and needed and they still made one another laugh. She had a few goals and some dreams but wasn't acting on any of them. She called herself content.

Ally came to me because she was curious. She asked in our first meeting - "Am I missing something? I have so much good stuff in my life and yet I'm not thrilled or invested in it the way I crave to be."

"What is it you crave?", I asked her.

"Inspiration. Excitement. Growth. Purpose."

"What makes you think your life as it is can't provide these things?", I continued.

"Because...if I took more risks, traveled, maybe wrote a book, moved to a new city, had more adventure, brought my passions to life...then I'd be inspired, excited, growing, and on purpose."

"There's just one teeny, tiny, detail you missed...", I commented.

"What's that?"

"You can DO more, TRY more, EXPLORE more, and GO to new places. But remember, YOU have to bring yourself along."

"Ok...what do you mean?"

"Inspiration, excitement, growth, and purpose aren't out there...they're IN here. They are within the eye of the beholder. If you want fulfillment and joy every day choose to see, feel, expect, believe, trust, and be fulfilled and joyful everyday.

"How do I just choose these things without changing anything in my life?"

"Well...you're choosing right now for your life to not mean these things. It's no different. It's just a different choice."

You must stop trying to change what you are getting for yourself and go to work on changing what you are giving to yourself.

- Guy Finley, The Secret of Letting Go

Put more simply - the best kept secret to life is this: Stop doing and start BEING.

A flower is just a flower. You get to DECIDE if it's worth stopping to admire and smell or if you keep walking. How you do anything is how you do everything. If you don't stop and smell the flowers you won't stop and admire your success or enjoy an incredible meal or stop and soak up the sunshine.

All our unhappiness lies hidden in our ideas about who we are and how life should treat us.

How do you treat life? Life shows you incredible things everyday. Strangers smiling as you pass on the street. Fresh rain. A great cup of tea. Your child's laugh. You can't create these experiences, all you can do is acknowledge them. Is your life a means to get to the next venture or is your life THE venture? The beautiful thing is, you get to choose.

It isn't what you do that creates joy, it's who you are that allows joy into your life.

If you see an ugly world it's because you believe the world is ugly. If you see a beautiful world it's because you believe the world is beautiful. Like these ideas but want even more? Listen to my most recent call - The Power of your Unconscious Mind and download the journal prompts to go with.

Your perspective doesn't simply form an opinion about your life and the world around you - your perspective creates it.What are you building?

How to get off the accomplishment roller coaster
Measure of my success is joy
Measure of my success is joy

As we continue Conscious Living for Mindful Entrepreneurs Month today we're talking about the accomplishment roller coaster. What is it? How do you know when you're on it? Why should you get off of it? First - the response to last week's article, When is enough really 'enough'? was awesome. I am so glad this is hitting home AND that you're getting something positive from it. Today's topic is part of feeling like enough - today we're asking this BIG question:

How do I measure my success and ultimately my happiness?

The accomplishment roller coaster goes a little something like this -

You set out with your dream and your vision for making an impact in your market. You start dedicating your time and energy to helping this come to life. This is the initial climb where you are building momentum, s-l-o-w-l-y.

Then you hit a peak where your dedication, message, and market come together in this perfect storm and you hit a downhill flow. It feels incredible! You're experiencing the rush of people loving, craving, and buying your work. You feel...happiness in your gut as you realize what you've accomplished.

Then...it comes to a stall.

Maybe you launched a new idea and it's over now.

Maybe your recent influx of business, which felt so amazing at first, is slowing down or not enough anymore. Suddenly you need more and more for that rush to come over you.

Maybe you're at the end of a busy season and you don't have anything in the foreseeable future.

You start brainstorming, planning, dreaming and the climb begins all over again...

This is the accomplishment roller coaster.

Now you might be saying, "But I love the rush! What's wrong with this roller coaster?"

There is nothing wrong with it. In fact, we need that boost of inspiration to keep us innovating, creating, and providing for the people we care to serve.

There will always be a drive for accomplishment. This is good. Remember how last week I wrote that the last thing we want as entrepreneurs is apathy? Bringing our inspiration to life keeps us rooted and manifesting at the same time.

The question then becomes...

If you don't have a new idea, a big launch, or an influx of business are youstill happy & fulfilled?

Here's 3 major reasons why the accomplishment roller coaster can be troublesome.

Reason #1: Your joy is measured by doing, not by being

If your entrepreneurial happiness is measured by how much you DO then it can never be measured by you BEING an entrepreneur. Happiness is not something you can seek, it's something you experience by getting rid of everything that makes you not-happy. Do you trust that you can let go of the need to constantly be accomplishing something and enjoy that you're living a dream? Is the constant drive keeping you from experiencing the sheer joy of your dream?

Reason #2: Your drive is now hooked into what's next, keeping you focused on the future

When you're hooked on what comes next you're living from the illusive future. What's wrong with this? The future isn't real! It's a concept that never actually arrives. When the future arrives it's NOW. What is happening NOW in your work to be grateful for? To enjoy? To be happy with?

Reason #3:  You stop enjoying what is for fear of what may or may not happen

Have you ever had an incredible day with your work to quickly find yourself worrying about the momentum sticking? When you're riding the accomplishment roller coaster you're looking to what's next to experience joy today. What requirements have you put into your work that keeps happiness at bay? Can you allow yourself to lean into simple happiness just because?

Do you want off the accomplishment roller coaster? What if I could guarantee you'll still be inspired to keep going AND your happiness in your work won't rely on what's next any longer? IF this sounds good then here are 3 Simple Tips for Mindful Accomplishment. Remember: the goal isn't to stop achieving. It's to use achievement appropriately and not to measure your worth or your joy by your accomplishments.

Do what you LOVE. Period.

Do you LOVE what you're doing? If not, stop. Seriously. I've worked with several entrepreneurs that are putting things in their path because they think it will help their bottom line. I can't stress this enough - no amount of money will ever compensate for a lack of enjoyment or love for what you do. Ever. How you feel about what you're creating translates. The people you serve know when your heart's in it and when it's not. Be heart-centric!

Be what you LOVE. Period.

Do you LOVE who you are when you show up in your work? Just as important as loving what you create, do you love who you are in the process? Are you a model for how an entrepreneur prides himself or herself? If not, why not? What change is needed to be this person? Only you can answer this and I know there are many of you reading this now who would say, "Nope. I would want people to work hard but not burn out like me!" Then stop. You can work hard, accomplish your dreams, and breath into the moment.

ENJOY what you've created. Period.

Do you ENJOY what you've created? How often do you stop, take a look at how far you've come, and celebrate what you've created? This is mindful accomplishment. If you must get back on the roller coaster, take some space before and check in with yourself. Take a long look around. Why keep pushing if you aren't even going to stop and see what you're working so hard for? Express gratitude for this life you've created. It's amazing what you do! It's ok - you're allowed to take a step back and fully enJOY this.

Your accomplishments change the world. Your ideas change people's lives and this elevates the world. Thank you for this! Now - take accomplishment and joy apart.

I leave you with a saying I have hanging in my office (you can see a photo of it above!). Take this to heart and seek JOY first. I promise you that inspired accomplishment will follow.

The measure of my success is my joy

If you seek joy through accomplishment you'll always be seeking. If your accomplishment IS joy, then it's joy!

In light and love,

Andrea

When is enough really 'enough'?
When is enough enough
When is enough enough

To kickoff Conscious Living for Mindful Entrepreneurs Month today I, along with some help from Michael Knouse of The Startup Sessions, will break down this BIG and inevitable question -

When is enough really 'enough'?

If you are an entrepreneur then this is a question I’m certain you’ve pondered more than once. It isn’t so much something you ask as it’s something you can feel every workday. It’s a sense or a feeling you get in your gut as you wonder, ‘Am I doing the absolute most I possibly can?’

I, too, have struggled with this from time to time because there’s no one there but me to quantify and qualify my work. There’s no one to check in with and there’s no one to give me reviews except for my client’s and their results.

When you ask yourself this question what you’re really asking is –

Am I good enough, smart enough, and resilient enough to just be?

Even mastermind groups, although very supportive, become a place for making sure you’re pushing one another and yourself as much as possible.

Lately I’ve heard many entrepreneurs say things like, “There’s too much to do to slow down” and, “I’ll rest when I’m dead.” It begs the question – do you remember why you work so hard to begin with?

I’m sure you’d agree that you work for your individuation and your right to creative freedom. Both are benefits and blessings. Which makes slowing down or feeling like you can settle in and that you’ve done enough feel like pipe dreams.

Before I share Michael's Four Keys for accepting that you’re doing enough and are enough I first offer you 3 myths that you might believe. If any of these feel like you then no wonder feeling like enough is hard to accept!

But don’t fret – as soon as you see how these are actually counter-productive to your success I have a strong feeling you’ll let them go and embrace this first step in mindful entrepreneurialism – letting enough really be ‘enough’.

3 BIG Myths keeping you Hustling for ‘Enough’

Myth No. 1: "If I slow down then I will become irrelevant"

Do you feel like if you slow down or pull back you’ll fall behind? What if trying to be the leader in your field was actually costing you?

Your success isn’t marked by out ranking your competition. Showing your competition how much you push, rally, or hustle also doesn’t mark your success. The only people who are invested in your success are the people who’s lives you’re here to impact.

What would they say about how hard you push? Do they need you constantly stay ahead of the curve or do they need you to simply show up with passion and love for what you do and who you do it for?

Myth No. 2: "If I feel like enough I’ll stop pushing, growing, and evolving"

Do you feel like if you do feel like enough you’ll end up settling? I appreciate that for many the idea of settling as an entrepreneur is like a slow, painful death. The thing you want to experience least is apathy.

Here’s the truth – feeling like enough actually gives you permission to do your work from a place of calm assertiveness and this lends itself naturally to creative evolution.

You don’t have to hustle for inspiration. When you let go it’s there. Stop clinging to growth and you’ll find you naturally keep moving forward AND at a pace you can enjoy.

Myth No. 3: "If it’s really enough I won’t feel like I’m successful"

Do you feel like in order to appear successful you have to push yourself to the brink? It’s important to mention here that somewhere along the way we as a society started associating hustling for our importance and self-worth with success and accomplishment. Somehow pushing to exhaustion AND success has become synonymous.

Success isn’t something you can do. It’s something you experience through your beliefs and your state of mind first and these set you up to take appropriate action.

If you don’t ever feel like you do enough to be successful then doing more won’t help you get there any faster. If you feel like showing up with intention, grace, and passion mean you’re successful then everyday that you bring fourth intention, grace, and passion you’re successful.

This all being said, I recruited some help with today’s big question. Michael Knouse of The Startup Sessions interviews entrepreneurs for his successful podcast and works as a entrepreneur's coach. I felt he would have some awesome insight and per usual he didn’t let me down! Four Keys by Michael Knouse.

Four Keys to Answering, “When is enough ‘enough’?

Key No. 1: Understand the energy behind the question

Sometimes there is an underlying feeling of “I’m not good enough therefore I need to work harder to prove myself worthy.” I like to always dig into the reason behind the question. This is so important. If you aren’t certain where the energy to ask this is coming from turn it into a journal question and find out.

Key No. 2: Check in and make sure there is a solid foundation of self-care

Establish physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional self-care. Many people try to stay busy and use this as an excuse to ignore the importance of having empowering rituals in place.

Instead of working harder, how can I create my life in a way that will lead to having more energy and doing my best work? I often use an example of the prior version of myself being stressed out and burnt out in my corporate life. I was always in work mode and never made time for me. Once I started creating time for physical exercise, a little meditation, eating better, then everything else started to shift.

I generally refer to this as living from a place of wholeness and it always generates more clarity, strength and resilience for doing our greatest work.

Key No. 3: Do an honest review of where you’re spending your time

9 of 10 people think they need to work harder when in reality they need to focus on what’s important to have the biggest impact.

For my clients this often involves conducting a week-long inventory of tracking what they do in 30 minute increments. This is always a HUGE eye opener. Focusing on less and simpler (but effective) tasks is usually a powerful thing for most people.

For example, if you are a new coach then your job can most likely be boiled down to 1) taking really good care of yourself, 2) have enrollment conversations to fill your practice, and 3) coaching people. Here’s a great blog article that I often refer people to understand the power of focus and clarity http://sebastianmarshall.com/cutting-down-you-brilliant-person-you-need-to-cut-down.

Key No. 4: Recognize leverage and ways to implement it into your life AND business

This is more tactical in nature but one personal example is finding leverage with my web site. My primary work is with 1-on-1 clients and I typically need to engage someone in a discovery session to move them towards becoming a client.

I reached out to a handful of people to discuss ways to make this process easier (leverage my time and still provide high touch/high value). As a result of these conversations my new home page is now simply focused on engaging people to fill out a short form and setup an initial discovery session. My site didn’t do this before and I was missing the opportunity to make my business life much easier since I get decent traffic to my site.

Thank you for joining in on this conversation Michael! Be sure and listen to his podcast. The dialogue's are well worth diving into.

Join me next week as we continue Conscious Living for Mindful Entrepreneur's Month by diving into the 'accomplishment hamster wheel'. Do you ever feel like the more you accomplish the more there is TO accomplish? Find out why this happens and how to be mindful of achievement and fulfillment at the same time.

In light and love,

Andrea

April Book Club Chat: The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks
BIG-LEAP-CHAT.jpeg

big leapToday's book club chat is about this powerful read: The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks. This book changed my life. His points are easy to follow and even easier to integrate.

"Life is at its best when love, money, and creativity are growing in harmony." - Gay Hendricks

I love this quote from the beginning of the book. The question then begs, "How?" And 'The Big Leap' is the answer. As he points out, the problem is we have a limited tolerance for feeling good. We know how to feel pain - we have an entire brain center dedicated to it!

Which is why his initial three questions sparked my interest -

"Are you willing to increase the amount of time every that you feel good inside?

Are you willing to increase the amount of time that your whole life goes well?

Are you willing to feel good and have your life go well all the time?"

I'm certain you said, 'yes!' Me too. Well, having read the book now, how did you do? Let's explore this further. Join in by leaving a comment below. Please note that comments are public.

1.) He writes, "In the face of so much evidence that life hurts and is fraught with adversity on all fronts, having a willingness to feel good and have life go well all the time is a genuinely radical act." What do you think of this?

I had to really stop and think about this - and I totally agree with him. It is a radical act. To actually love your life IS a radical act. To spend your day figuring out more ways to feel good instead of why you feel bad will change your life. What do you think?

2.) What do you think about his description of "upper limits"?

Think of an upper limit as that glass ceiling you've inadvertently placed on your life. This one is universal. We all have upper limits and they're all invisible to us. My upper limits used to do with success and money. Every time I would reach a peak of success "something would happen..." I put this in quotations because you know what I'm talking about. We aren't conscious or aware, I should say, of our upper limits. They aren't obvious and they're always masked as just unfortunate circumstances. Here's a BIG secret: there's no such thing as unfortunate circumstances. This can be an entire article so I won't dive in too much here. If you want to know WHY then tune into my free call on May 14th.

3.) Do you live in your Zone of Genius?

This was a major theme from the book and my favorite. His description of living and working from a place that also helped you let go of 'get-oriented' goals is very appealing. I applied this to my work right away and cut back on things that weren't fulfilling anymore. I cut out all the 'should's' from my work and as left with a business I absolutely love. How did you apply the Zone of Genius to your life?

Thanks for joining me for April's book club! I'll leave you with this quote from the book:

"Long ago you made a handshake deal with the universe that you wouldn't hold back. It's easy when you're comfortable to forget the deal you made with your soul to use yourself fully."

In light, love, and books,

Andrea

P.S.

There is not a book club selection in May while I focus on my Conscious Living for Mindful Entrepreneurs month! I'll be sure and make up for this with a really good read in June. Who doesn't love summer reading?

May is Conscious Living for Mindful Entrepreneurs month!
MINDFUL-ENTREPRENEURS.jpeg

Mindful EntrepreneursI work for myself from the comfort of my own home. I am incredibly grateful for this and know it's not for everyone. Everything I teach is something I myself use in my own life. Meditation, journal writing, morning rituals, vulnerability, resilience, and owning my worth are all daily practices I preach and utilize. The #1 place where these practices get used, tested, and are needed most? Being an entrepreneur.

65% of my private coaching clients are entrepreneurs or business owners. I won't assume that 65% of my readers are too but it is a safe assumption you all want more ease, clarity, freedom, abundance, and certainty in your life.

The reason I bring this up is because a new theme has emerged in my work. If you consider yourself an entrepreneur or want to be then this is for you. I am having similar conversations with this 65%. They are all incredibly successful or on their way to immense success. And yet there is a BIG problem...

As an entrepreneur myself I can appreciate the reasons we choose this path. We have ideas, solutions, and drive. We crave freedom, flexibility, and a place to funnel our creativity. And then something we didn't expect starts to happen...

No matter how much we do we don't feel like it's enough.

We start feeling guilty for taking time to rest and restore.

Somewhere along the way we assimilate accomplishment with happiness leaving us on a hamster wheel with no end.

We believe when we achieve our next goal we'll feel like we've made it....and then the goals get bigger and bigger with no stopping.

Every other part of our life starts to suffer. Our friends, family, partner, hobbies, health, finances, and spiritual practice become second to our work.

For these very reasons I am dedicating May to Conscious Living for Mindful Entrepreneurs.

Over the next month here's what you can expect from me:

  • Monday articles to help you reframe your work week. These articles will address the dilemmas above plus more. I encourage you to share these! It's time for the Mindful Entrepreneur to emerge, don't you think?
  • A FREE tele-seminar. Join me on Thursday, May 21st at 12PM PDT for a 60 Minute Free Call. I will address your biggest concerns as an entrepreneur AND share with you my best tools for living into your full potential in ALL areas of your life. Wouldn't you love to bring the same energy and dedication to your relationship, finances, friends, family, health, and spirituality that you bring to your work and personal growth?
  • A FREE Journal Workbook for joining the tele-seminar. Following this extensive call I will provide you with a FREE journal workbook so you can begin putting what you learn into practice.
  • Additional insight from my mentors & coaches. I have the most incredible community of fellow entrepreneurs, coaches, and mentors. I've enlisted their help! You'll see them pop into the articles and on the tele-seminar so that you get the best guidance.

What do you need to do? Just show up. You can read the articles here every Monday from May 4th - 25th. You will also get them in your email IF you're signed up on my email list below.

Why am I doing this? Because you deserve to actually live the life you imagined for yourself when you opened your business or pursued the inspiring track of an entrepreneur.

What I WON'T be talking about...

There are TONS of business coaches & programs out there.  T-O-N-S. And I'm grateful for this - they've helped me to run my business. Everything from sales and social media to websites and blogging. But that's not my area of expertise. So let's talk about what I won't be touching on in this series:

  • Business. <-----period. You can run a business. And successfully. What of the other parts of your life you got into this work to make better? How are they doing?
  • Marketing. As an entrepreneur you sell yourself. What if you were so proud of yourself your work sold itself?
  • Money. Do you want to live a prosperous and abundant life? Would you like to take the pressure off your business to provide for you?
  • Balance. It's not about creating a balancing act. What if you were driven to be as successful in your finances, relationships, finances, spiritual practice, friendships, family, and hobbies as you are in business?

Who this series IS for...

  1. You are currently an entrepreneur
  2. You are struggling to feel like you're doing enough
  3. You want balance and security built back into your daily life

I'm so excited to provide this and more for you. Thank you for being here! See you next week when we'll begin by talking about 'When is enough really enough?'

10 Journal Prompts for Changing Your Story
CHANGE-YOUR-STORY.jpeg

10 Journal Prompts for Changing Your StoryIf you couldn't tell by now - I throughly enjoy journal writing. My journals have been such companions over the years. They give me space to get clear or understand things in my life in a new way. They are a wonderful listening ear when I need to vent or process something. They are also my best dream keepers and goal setters. Before I launch an idea or create anything new in my life I write it out in my journal first. A huge part of living a conscious life is using the power of intention and self-awareness to wake up and create positive change in your life. Your journal is your best companion for this. Today I want to share 10 Prompts that can help you change your story.

What's your story?

Your story is your life. Your story can also be, unfortunately, a predictor of your future. I say 'can' because it doesn't have to be. If you want your future to hold something different for you then you have to stop using your past as a guide. Today's journal prompts will help you reframe the things you wish to change in your life so that a new outcome is possible.

Why does reframing work?

Think of anything you wish to be different in your life. For example, your health, your finances, a relationship, even a habit you want to quit. That thing you want to change is the byproduct of your current beliefs, emotions, thoughts, and memories. Until we change those these things can't change because they are being filtered through a lens that is totally unconscious. (If you want to understand how this works and how to use your unconscious experiences to your advantage RSVP for this free call here!)

10 Journal Prompts to Change your Story

Bring the specific thing to mind you wish to change or have be different in the future. It's important that you get specific because otherwise you're working with a general idea and that is way too big for your brain to tackle and yield the specific outcome you want.

Write WHAT you want to change at the top of your blank journal page. Then use the following 10 prompts and work with what you want to change. Note: each question builds on the one before it. Take the answer to question 1 and use it for question 2 and so on...

  1. How's that a problem?
  2. And how's that a problem?
  3. What do you want in place of this?
  4. What is the intention for that?
  5. For what purpose?
  6. How will that make you feel?
  7. What is the intention for that?
  8. This means that what you really want is...
  9. How will you know when you've achieved this?
  10. What will you do differently moving forward?

IF you followed this process from #1-10 what you have at the end is a pro-active solution to your what you want to change instead of a focus on what you wish were different. This is a powerful tool because it gives you the path every single time.

Try it for more than one area in your life. You will find that the solution in the end is similar for many of the changes you wish to make in your life. The thing you're trying to change has a higher purpose like security, acceptance, freedom, certainty, etc. Make this your focus and watch change unfold.

In light, love, and journal writing,

Andrea

Want to know the secrets to fulfillment?
4-PATHS-TO-FULFILLMENT.jpeg

Secrets to fulfillmentLast week I wrote about the 4 Paths to Happiness. Happiness is found in letting go of everything in your life that doesn't bring you happiness. It's this simple. Now here's where it gets really interesting - negative emotions cannot live in the future. They are only in relation to the past. Negative emotions include anger, sadness, fear, grief, anxiety, and limiting beliefs. When you let go of a negative emotion you're freeing up your future to be the happy and joyful state you're meant to be, now.

Fulfillment is very similar. Let's break the word down. To be ful-filled is to be full of this things that bring you joy and not of the things that don't. More love, less hate. More joy, less anxiety. More happiness, less anger.

When you become right with your being, everything else falls into it's most right place

Part of conscious living is modeling successful behavior. Successful people take conscious and intentional action in their life in these 4 areas. They don't leave it to chance. Successful people understand that they are the literal creators of their fulfillment. Each path below comes from within. The lack of these in your life also comes from within.

The difference maker? YOU. Let's dive right in! Here are my 4 Paths of Fulfillment:

Happiness

What brings you joy? Remember my 4 ways to shift into happiness - you can be happy in this very moment when you let go of everything making you not happy. Quite simply: what brings you joy?

Connection

What gives you strength? What, when you're totally connected to it, gives you strength?

Purpose

What is the most authentic expression of yourself? What, when you're engaged with it, lights you up from the inside out?

Alignment

Alignment is the congruency of the three paths above. You live in alignment when your happiness, connection, and purpose are all working for you.

I've kept these short for a reason. These aren't complicated questions - their power lies in your response AND your taking action on what you respond with. If you know what brings you joy, makes you feel connected, and helps you express your soul and you aren't doing it then you don't achieve fulfillment.

Start with the one that means the most to you in this moment.

Guidepost #10: Cultivate Laughter, Song, & Dance - Part Two
guidepost-10-cultivate-laughter.jpeg

guidepost 10Last Spring I wrote a 10-part series based on one of my very favorite books, "The Gifts of Imperfection" by Brene Brown. Each week for 10 weeks I shared one guidepost from the book, a few thoughts, plus a journal prompt. For an overview of each guidepost visit here.

Guidepost #10: Cultivate Laughter, Song, & Dance - Let go of Being Cool and 'Always in Control'

Welcome to the final guidepost in this series! I like that The Gifts of Imperfection wraps up with this guidepost because at the end of the day it's a really good idea to let go and let be. Today's guidepost is all about cultivating joy and letting go of keeping a lid on the things that make you happy.

This reminds me of an article I wrote last year for Tiny Buddha. I was inspired by watching my then 1 1/2 year old niece play. Her sense of wonder and presence of mind was and still is inspiring. She doesn't think about playing, she just plays. She is always laughing, singing, dancing, and being curious about her surroundings. Where does this sense of wonder go?

As adults I think it's too easy to be serious. We easily stop ourselves from leaning into the joy of a moment because we want to make sure we don't look too silly or attract too much attention.

This guidepost is about acknowledging you might look silly and you might draw some looks but lean into what feels good! Laugh really loud. Dance to your favorite songs. And sing along when you can't not because you love the song so much.

It's ok if you lose control for a moment. Your happy hormones will thank you for it.

To help you cultivate guidepost #10 I have a journal prompt for you:

I let loose and let go by...

This is the final guidepost in this series! You can read each one here. Go back and re-read the posts that you need the most and try the journal prompts on in your journal more than once.

Thank you for joining me on this journey!

In light and love,

Andrea

4 Ways to Shift into Happiness
4-WAYS-TO-SHIFT-INTO-HAPPINESS.jpeg

4 ways to shift into happinessThere are two things people are seeking when they come to me. After doing this work now for more than 5 years and having spent over 400 hours in session with people I can confidently say you're looking for happiness or fulfillment. Today I'll share 4 ways to shift into happiness

Happiness and fulfillment are similar although when you seek happiness what you're really seeking is a release and a sense of completeness at the same time. What you really want is to let go of anything keeping you from happiness and you want to bring any remaining closure to your life so you can enjoy the happiness you seek.

When you seek fulfillment what you're really seeking is wholeness. You wish to call back into your life the things you've let go astray and you want to send things out of your life that are keeping you from wholeness like stories, habits, or behaviors that no longer suit you. Next week I'll share 4 Ways to Feel Fulfilled.

Before we dive into my 4 ways to shift into happiness I have to share this - happiness is not circumstantial.

If happiness were circumstantial then the happiness you experienced because of your most recent accomplishment wouldn't have faded.

If happiness were circumstantial then the happiness you experienced because of your new relationship wouldn't have faded.

If happiness were circumstantial then the happiness you experienced because of your new house or new car wouldn't have faded.

If happiness were circumstantial then the happiness you experienced because of your most recent vacation wouldn't have faded.

These are examples of circumstantial happiness - happiness that is experienced because of some external thing. A new goal, a new relationship, a new material thing, or a new place.

So then, what is happiness?

Happiness is a byproduct of your beliefs and is within you right now

The good news (actually, great news!) is that IF happiness is a byproduct of your beliefs AND is inside of you THEN you can be happy right now in this very moment no matter what!

Given this truth let's explore my 4 Ways to Shift into Happiness.

#1 - Say Thanks

Spoken or written gratitude is the easiest and most efficient way to shift into happiness. Stop reading and write down 5 things you're grateful for right now. Remember my Ultimate Gratitude List? If you can't find anything to be grateful for look at my ultimate gratitude list for some inspiration.

#2 - Tune in

Chances are if you're reading this then you're in a safe enough space to do so. Tune into your present moment. What do you see? How do you feel? A worry is a future fear and a grief is a past. What of right now?

#3 - Look for Bright Spots

As my friend and women's business coach extraordinaire, Mary Ann McNulty, teaches - look for bright spots. We are hardwired to look for possible threats in your environment. Everything from an oncoming car to your ex showing up at your favorite coffee shop. What of the bright spots? The things in your life that are going really well? Search for these and write them down. Stop reading and write down 5-10 bright spots in your life.

#4 - Release

Releasing is a powerful and simple technique to help you release your grip on your attachment to any emotional state. Any immediate reaction to something, like anger or resentment, will only last 1-2 minutes. The future of that emotion is dependent on your attachment to it. An emotion only survives in the future if you fuel it and keep it alive.

What if you let it go? It doesn't mean you have to let go of the hurt you were caused. It means you release the emotion from having such a strong hold on you.

If you have any of these strong emotions - apathy, grief, fear, anger, or pride - and you can't seem to let them go or the emotion is hindering your happiness please book a Power Chat. It's my gift to you and we can release the emotion and heal from the story in less than an hour.

Something you'll notice about each idea above is they're each a practice. Happiness is a daily practice. Slowly, over time, this practice starts to radically shift how you see and experience your world. You won't always have to put so much intention into this. One day happiness will be your default. Just like that.

Guidepost #9: Cultivate Meaningful Work - Part Two
GUIDEPOST-9.jpeg

Guidepost 9 cultivate meaningful workLast Spring I wrote a 10-part series based on one of my very favorite books, "The Gifts of Imperfection" by Brene Brown. Each week for 10 weeks I shared one guidepost from the book, a few thoughts, plus a journal prompt. For an overview of each guidepost visit here.

Guidepost #9: Cultivate Meaningful Work - Let go of Self-Doubt & 'Supposed to'

You are more than the work you do – you are the causes you support, the way you show care to your friends, how you embrace your most authentic beliefs, and how you show compassion to the world around you. One of the biggest struggles I hear in my work is people not feeling like they're living on purpose.

It's common to seek purpose in your work but your life is your work. What if you change the title to "Cultivate a Meaningful Life" how would this change your perspective on purpose?

Embrace living a meaningful life. This doesn't mean you have to do something BIG, it means you get to do things with intention. Chances are the things that are best for you are also best for others.

What if you lived your life by speaking kindly to yourself? By trusting your community? By lending a helping hand? Don't fear if you're doing enough - a life of loving intention is more than enough. It all starts from within you.

To help you cultivate guidepost #9 I have a journal prompt for you:

I cultivate a meaningful life by...

Join me next Friday as we explore our final Guidepost #10: Cultivate Laughter, Song, and Dance – Let go of Being Cool and 'Always in Control'.

In the meantime bring this guidepost into practice by trying the journal prompt this week.

4 Ways to know if you're grounded
how-to-plant-strong-roots.jpeg

How to plant strong roots for changeHave you ever been frustrated trying to make a change stick?

Do you try new things or ideas only to find them fade away quickly?

Do you have the best intention to create a positive change but it just doesn't happen how you want or expect?

If you said 'yes' to one or all of the above then today's article is for you - 4 ways to know if you're grounded and how to plant strong roots for change. What is a root? How do you know you're rooted? Why is this important?

We all live in our heads. We're intellectual beings who crave rationality and for things to 'make sense'. Even those with devotional spiritual practices like to be able to connect the dots and have explanations for the things they believe in. This is why I chose the word 'faith' for 2015 - to help me cultivate a healthy relationship with not knowing but knowing in a totally new way.

When it comes to change of any kind we tackle it with rationality first - what's the plan? What's the strategy? Why did this happen this way? How do I logically approach this? There is nothing wrong with this approach. Strategy comes from our need to create predictable plans. We want change to happen within our comfort zone.

The trouble is - if you're not grounded it doesn't matter how much you plan. You can't plan your way into new change if that change has no place to root!

My favorite way to understand your root is to study the First Chakra: Root or Muladhara. Our Root Chakra is part of the Chakra System - the Chakra System are 7 wheels of energy in our body and spirit. They are a conduit or sort of highway for our life force to come down into this embodied being. The 7 energy centers are Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, and Crown. I will be diving into the Chakra System more and more in coming posts. If they peak your interest then you're in for a treat!

Your Root Chakra lives at the base of your spine and is our most Earth bound energy center. It is our very first right in this life - the right to exist. It is mostly concerned with safety and security - food, shelter, security, nurturing, connection, and love.

Imagine you have a vast root system that grounds you - this root system keeps you anchored to this body and life. All change is anchored in your Root Chakra.

Why?

Change by definition is unpredictable. It's taking what you know - even when that something doesn't serve you - and making it different. For example, if you're trying to find more balance, accomplish a new goal, find more happiness, etc. even though these are positive changes they are changes.

If you aren't grounded, or secure, then change just won't take root in your life. It's not safe enough for it to.

For today - here are 4 ways to know if you're grounded

1. You feel provided for - you trust yourself and your environment to meet your needs

2. You feel safe in the world

3. You are comfortable in your body

4. You are able to relax in your body and even be cared for

Guidepost #8: Cultivate Calm & Stillness - Part Two
CULTIVATE-CALM-AND-STILLNESS-PART-TWO.jpeg

GUIDEPOST 8 CULTIVATE CALM AND STILLNESSLast Spring I wrote a 10-part series based on one of my very favorite books, "The Gifts of Imperfection" by Brene Brown. Each week for 10 weeks I shared one guidepost from the book, a few thoughts, plus a journal prompt. For an overview of each guidepost visit here.

Guidepost #8: Cultivate Calm & Stillness - Let go of Anxiety as a Lifestyle

Similar to self-worth anxiety has become synonymous with 'productive' and 'hard-work'. However, anxiety as a way of being is at an all-time high. I've written extensively about anxiety. Two of my all-time most popular posts are this and this about anxiety and how to get rid of it without medication.

Today I want to talk about the role anxiety plays in your life. Anxiety is simply the inability to predict a safe future. Anxiety becomes the default for worry, not knowing, or unpredictability. The problem is you don't lift this veil to realize in this moment none of this is real.

The things you worry about haven't happened yet.

The things you don't know you don't know yet.

The things you can't predict you can't predict!

All based on future-happenings, anxiety is about tomorrow. What of today? Turn toward the present moment - what is happening right in this moment? It's probably not that exciting, right?

If you're reading this than I can guarantee you're in a safe place otherwise you wouldn't be able to focus on these words or think about this content. Are you safe? Is your breath calm? Are you able to let the sensation of stillness come over you? If not, what are you fighting?

Sometimes you keep anxiety around because you think if you can worry about it then you can control it. I don't want to burst your bubble - but you can't control it. You can only control your response or reaction. Part of this is allowing yourself to let go of the worry and anxiety and embrace what's actually happening in this moment.

To help you cultivate guidepost #8 I have a journal prompt for you:

In this very moment I feel...

Join me next Friday as we explore Guidepost #9: Cultivate Meaningful Work – Let go of Self-Doubt and "Supposed to".

In the meantime bring this guidepost into practice by trying the journal prompt this week.

In light and love,

Andrea
