January Book Club Chat: Steering by Starlight

Steering by Starlight"The caterpillar that goes into the cocoon never survives. It can't in order to emerge as a butterfly."  - Martha Beck

This is the first thing I wrote down upon picking up this book. I love this quote and I think it sums up this read nicely. She's saying that to be who you're meant to become you literally have to dissolve who you are. 'You don't feel or think your way to re-alignment with your path. You dissolve the thoughts and feelings that blind to what you know.'

The basic premise is that your soul's story is already written for you. Your role here on earth is to dismantle the shackles built by you fear brain and dissolve the ego's story of limitation so that you can live out that which is already perfectly designed for you.

Let's dive into some questions! Please leave your thoughts in the comments section below. *Please note: All comments are public. If you wish to send your thoughts privately I would still love to hear them. Please click contact above to do so.

1. How do you feel about the author's statement that we defend our fears?

At first I felt like, "No way! I don't defend them." But in really reflecting here, I do, we all do. We protect the very things that keep us small and held back. Not because we are on our fear's side but because our fears are just as much part of our identity as our non-fears. They too have created the frame through which we see and respond to the world. When we feel safe. When we don't. What we're capable of and what we're not. To take our fears away is to shake up our identity. That's the real fear...

2. Have you ever felt 'called' to your journey?

Yes! It wasn't a profound moment at the time but it changed how I defined my reality and it defined the laws of how I believe everything works. I wrote about that experience here. Just as Martha Beck points out, when we start to walk our path we start to let go of attachments to anything that makes that path hazy. This could be toxic relationships, thoughts, even certain foods.

3. How did it make you feel when she writes that we're trapped not by people but concepts?

This is hard to hear because if it's not 'out there' then it's within me! If I have the power to change it, will I? This is the desire but few of us actually harness the vast power we have everyday to direct our life. As she writes, "We have to kill the dungeons that keep us totally trapped." We have to tell ourselves a more accurate story and believe it. We are not flawed, we are not imperfect, and we are not un-worthy. But we spend way too much time creating elaborate stories as to why these things are true. What would happen if we let them go? Could you handle the depth of your gifts and abilities?

4. What's your biggest takeaway from this book?

Life doesn't have to be a battle between the ego/survival brain and your soul's path. We are both/and. We can't vanquish our ego or our fears but we can certainly shift our relationship to them and how they effect our life.

Now I want to hear from you! What did you think of this book? Did you like it, not like it? Please leave your thoughts in the comments section below. *Please note: All comments are public. In light and love,
