Boundary Setting for Empaths
boundary setting for empaths

"Won't people think I'm unhelpful?" "What if I come across rude or closed off?" "If I set boundaries no one will want to be in my life." These are a few of the common questions and comments I hear when I bring up setting boundaries with my clients.

I also happen to coach and support highly sensitive people who are givers. They spend their days with their arms stretched out wide, metaphorically speaking. These are women who feel giving is a way of life -- that it's not just something to "do," but something that's become part of their identity, their way of being in the world.

To set a boundary when you feel like you are built not to -- well, it rarely goes over well. Especially if we assume that setting boundaries are about closing off who you are. If we think setting a boundary requires that we don't give, help, or that we shut down, I wouldn't set them either.

We think of boundaries as these hard stops, as lines in the sand that give the impression of, "Do not come any closer. Do not come any further. You are not welcome here." We think if we set a boundary we are saying to people: "Do not trespass. Wrong way, do not enter. Beware." But the power of a boundary is it gives you space, respect. and clarity.

A boundary allows both you and others to understand what your actual capacity is. It isn't just the thing that keeps energy that isn't yours in check, it also keeps you safe.

Before I get much further I need to insert a small disclaimer: I personally don't buy into the idea that we can cloak ourselves and be protected from "toxic people." I don't believe we can wear an energy shield or imagine that there is distinct separation between us.

This may be unpopular thinking because as an empath it's common ground that we can "self-protect." But in the quantum reality, there is no separation. Zip. Zero. The lines aren't blurry, there simply aren't any lines!

Which means, as poetic as wearing an energy shield sounds...I want to offer a different perspective. One that empowers you and reminds you that setting a boundary isn't about protection. It's about being your fullest self and feeling safe to do so.

How do we create, uphold, and appreciate setting boundaries if we're just walking around in one big pot of emotional soup? With intention and self-awareness.

Saying “no”  or feeling "no" in honor of my boundaries is a daily practice. One I don't always get right. I never want to let someone down, but what I find to be true every single time, without fail, is this – when I say yes to something that crosses a boundary for me I end up feeling resentful, disengaged, and annoyed. And I don’t want to represent my work or my life from this place, ever.

Boundaries are NOT a shield to keep people away.
Boundaries ARE about authentic connection.

Setting a boundary is how we connect most authentically with people. If you take all your triggers and baggage out of the equation, what’s left over is your most authentic self. Your most authentic self can easily connect with others because you know where your line in the sand is and YOU don’t cross it.

Boundaries are NOT hoarding your time or being unavailable.
Boundaries ARE about sharing yourself freely.

Setting a boundary is letting someone know what congruency looks like and feels like to you. This is you honoring your needs – your energy needs, your emotional needs, your support needs, and your self-care needs. When we take away from our own needs to make space for others this isn’t a boundary, it’s being a martyr.

Boundaries are NOT designed to bolster self-importance.
Boundaries are about self-respect.

Setting a boundary is not about self-righteousness or self-importance. They are about honoring, respecting, and taking a stand for what helps you feel and act your best. Only when you put yourself first can you show up fully for someone else.

Calling all beacons...

My business coach recently shared this short video with me. The film recounts a Superbowl halftime show when Prince was the main act. And it was raining. Like, pouring buckets. Panicked about the rain and all of the show components -- you know, like electricity -- they called down to Prince's dressing room to check in about going on or not. And his response was this:

Can you make it rain harder?

And he nailed this performance. You can see it in the link above.

Can you make it rain harder? This, dear beacon, is now our calling. Why else does a beacon exist but to guide in the dark? We are built for darkness, did you know this? And the darker it is the more you shine. So, make it rain harder.

Sure, it would be a heck of a lot more convenient if we weren't needed so much, because that would mean we lived in a time when we weren't afraid, when things were a bit more predictable, when you could turn on the news and not see death, war, fear, economic crashes, aliens, etc. (I am just guessing because I don't actually watch the news. I don't need to eye the dark to know it's there -- I can feel it. Can't you?)

A few signs you are a beacon:

You are sensitive. Like super sensitive. Not just emotionally but even physically. You probably struggle, or have struggled before, with ailments like chronic pain, stomach issues, headaches, etc. And when you are in large crowds you secretly want to crawl into a hole. And maybe binge watch Gilmore Girls. (Just an example.)

You feel called to something, even if you can't quite put your finger on it. You feel called to go within, to ask big questions, to ponder words like fulfillment, purpose, and worth. You don't just want to answer this call, but you want to help people because of this call.

You have an adverse relationship to money. You want to feel free of the burden to have money and you simultaneously understand the ease money can bring -- but this also causes conflict because you feel like money is short-sighted. You feel like it muddies the water. You fear if you mixed money with your gifts that the sky would fall. (Or something equally as absurd)

You feel slightly crazy. You see signs everywhere and although you keep most of them to yourself, they make you feel so normal and also slightly crazy. Synchronicities happen more frequently, which also make you feel normal and also slightly crazy.

You, despite the times, feel a deep sense of hope and possibility. The sky could be falling and you'd still say, "What a beautiful time to start anew!" This can leave you feeling a bit naive, like you are missing something. But you also feel a connection to hope, as though hope is not only available, it's the perfect time to employ the magic hope can create.

You woke up on November 9th, 2016 and felt equal parts sad and determined. Change is inevitable and not all change makes sense in the moment. But despite this looming change, you woke up on November 9th more determined than ever. Like you not only matter, but you can't keep yourself small any longer.

If you checked off any of these boxes, then congratulations, you're a beacon! Sorry, there's no medal or award for this. It is actually a bit of a burden even in the blessing of being a beacon. The burden? A looming sense that you have to do something with this newfound power, and fast. The blessing?

You are a light. And the lights just went out, my friend.

Next week is #bethebeacon week! To join just sign up for my Inner Circle above and you're in. Then simply open the emails and I hope you'll join your fellow beacons on the free "Be the Beacon" call on December 9th.

Light and love,

Andrea

Good ol' Gratitude
Bend Oregon
Bend Oregon

These are a few behind-the-scenes from an early

(early)

sunrise shoot at Devil's Lake last weekend. Driving up Cascade Lakes Hwy with the orange sun just illuminating Mt. Bachelor, as the fog rolled over the lakes, is a sight I will never forget. There is something magical about dawn and the waking of a new day. I am hitting pause today to reflect and express some much-needed gratitude. As I round the corner and count down the final 11 days until

Awaken Your Practice

I need to take a deep breath. I have been traveling, adventuring, writing, and preparing for this weekend since March and as it comes near I'm really just in awe.

Gratitude. The remarkable practice of recognizing the good. Something we can all do more of, don't you think?

Just two weeks ago I was on a private vision immersion with a client and watched gratitude melt fear before my very eyes.

I felt gratitude for nature that can take my breath away looking out over Sparks lake as the sun set.

And I feel gratitude (beyond measure) for my Awaken weekend just days away and everyone who has supported me in making this possible.

After we wrapped the photo shoot we warmed up over chai and the best hot breakfast I've had in a long time. My dear friend and photographer, Jennifer Alyse, looked at me and asked, "how do you stay grounded?" To which I replied, without even thinking about it, "I just am."

Hmm.

Is that true? Where did that answer come from?!

But this is one of the ways when I am in the midst of coaching, teaching, writing, travel, speaking, and creating that I keep my feet on the ground. I say thank you. For all of it. Yes, ALL of it. Even the things that push me and challenge me (which is a kind way of saying the things that light my sh*t up). Because I am also human and not exempt from struggling.

My goal isn't to not suffer but rather to understand my suffering and be ok with it. One of the ways I do this is through gratitude. And I invite you to practice some today. Call it thankfulness, gratitude, acknowledgment, appreciation, recognition, or many of the other synonyms it doesn't matter what you call it. What does matter (and I mean literally manifests) is born from what you SAY matters.

Here is a quick, unedited list of things I am grateful for in this very moment. I hope you make your own list and then bask in the energy of that gratitude.

People My work Fall Hot coffee Blank journals Family Our puppy Yummy tea Mountains Birdsong Creativity The ability to read Books Home cooked meals Taking a deep breath Working for myself This space here YOU Water Funny movies Money My health A good bottle of wine

Cards on my wall

Trees Travel Friends The ocean Hiking Meditation My coaches Lavender Red maples in the fall Fog in the morning Walks

and my beautiful, strong, inspired, supportive, powerful, loving wife.

I could keep going. This is the joy of gratitude, it has this kind of compound effect. Try it!

Truth Nuggets for my Birthday
Listen to your life
Listen to your life

I love a birthday. They are a gift in themselves. Because YOU are a gift. To even be here is a gift. But it doesn't mean it's always easy. In fact, I hope it isn't because it's those moments that push against our life where we learn the most. This has been an incredible year. It was just two years ago that I was in the throws of a total life collapse. Nothing added up anymore and I was very lost. So to be here today on the other side of that experience and to feel as grateful and full as I do...in a way feels like a miracle and in a way just feels like life.

This is how it goes - we live, learn, live, learn, etc. Some lessons suck. There's no polite way to say that. Some learnings are brutal and make you question everything. Some are mildly uncomfortable. And others barely flag your life but they are all just as important.Growth happens in the contrast of discomfort and comfort.

We learn about love when we hurt. We learn about life when we're lost. We learn about happiness when we're sad. We learn about success when we're failing. We learn about what we want when riddled with things we don't want.

I believe this so much that I have made my work and my life a dedication to teaching this. And I am no exception! I am human. Isn't it a wondrous thing?!

To celebrate my humanity I want to gift myself space to reflect on a few things I really took to heart this year. It was a year of radical growth for me. Radical as in rooted and anchored. Growth as in painful and awesome, all at the same time. If you get something from these, great! If not. Well, it's my birthday and sometimes you just have to be self-serving. ;) #kiddingnotkidding

I learned that no one can show up until I do. If life is my mirror then no one can show up until I show up. This is true in my work, friendships, family, community, and partnership. If I long for something then it is the very thing I have to give. If I need for something it is the very thing I need to give myself. Last November I came out as a spiritual leader. It wasn't as painful as I anticipated and it still challenges the part of me that is terrified of being invisible. I learned that if I really want to be seen in this way I have to BE this way.

I learned it isn't about me. When people reject my ideas, it isn't about me. When I serve my clients, it isn't about me. And when I speak to the truth I experience in my own heart and life it isn't about me. I feel that the work I am doing is my calling and my purpose for being on earth. And it is so much bigger than me even when it affects me.

I learned that I want things. I want the world to change. I want less violence. I want cancer to go away. I want a big house. I want to live in the mountains. I want my family to be healthy. I want to live a long life with my wife. I want to publish a book. I want to be a 7-figure coach. I want to put myself out there. I want people to stop judging and start loving. I want people to go within. I want to enjoy every aspect of life. I want to go Home. I want to not hide the things I want. We all want. It feels good! It's about dreaming and visioning new life. And it's about honoring and loving right where you are.

I learned that I have learned a lot. Yup. Not just this year but all the years of my life are so packed with lessons it's incredible. Life really is handed to you on a silver platter and the moment you see this, you are free.

I learned that I am fiercely loved and appreciated. THANK YOU.

I learned that I really love life. Like a lot. I really do love life. I am in awe of life and it's magic. I used to live from beneath a dark cloud and I didn't see the purpose of life. You could have spelled out miracles for me and I would have said you were a liar. And today I see so much beauty, potential, joy, and possibility everywhere I turn. I wouldn't change where I've been or what I've experienced.

I wish for all people to have their entire life be their entire awakening. To get out of their own way and go for it. To answer their calling and turn their art into their purpose and their gift back to the world. Maybe this is a selfish want. But it's my birthday and this is what I want.

Light and love, Andrea

"What are you waiting for?"
Light is the new black quote
Light is the new black quote

Something I loved writing for the Awaken your Practice workbook was these little notes from your higher self. I sprinkled them throughout the workbook. And they became the easiest and most fun parts to write. I am proud of the whole book but these little notes seem to come in at just the right time because they pack a BIG message. Today I offer a new one as a download from your higher self. Ok, my higher self but I have a feeling this something you also need to hear. (P.S. Sometimes my higher self uses some...assertive language. But she's smiling and coming from love. This I know for sure.) Enjoy!

Dear Soul,

What the *&#$ are you waiting for? No, really. What magic wand are you waiting to grant you this incredible thing you've already been given? We don't give inspiration to just anyone. We give specific inspiration to its perfect pairing, its perfect match, and it's perfect creator.

Can more than one of you build it? Of course. But if you possess the idea now I assure you there is a reason. Don't ask why. It's irrelevant.

You know when you see an idea out in the world and you think, "Hey! I thought of thatyears ago!" Well if you don't take the inspiration and build it we move it on to someone else. They didn't steal it. You dragged your feet. And quite honestly there is work to be done so we ask you to please stop dragging your feet.

Here's the thing, there's no one to give you the permission you seek. There's no one to invite you to the table of your purpose or of your life. There is no one to graduate you into the work you are destined for. And there is certainly no one to determine your value, worth, or ability to create said purpose. Except for one.

YOU.

You're it. You're your permission grantor. You graduate you. And you invite yourself to the table of our purpose. And something else we should mention - the work can't begin until you show up. It doesn't happen on the sidelines. It happens in the arena.

The big, beautiful, and bold work you're here to offer the world and to the evolution of your soul can not happen on paper or in your head. It requires doing something.

It requires a commitment to see it through even when it changes your life in ways you don't want. Even when it pushes you right to your edge of fear and limiting beliefs. And especially when it makes you question how incredible you actually are and how bright you are allowed to shine. It is in these moments when the purpose can reveal its entirety to you.

You think it's about just giving something to the world? Sorry. This is not a one-way ticket. This is a give and receive path. Because the very thing you have to give is the very thing you are destined to learn.

So we ask you - what are you waiting for? Don't look to us. We're waiting on you. It's your move.

Light and love, Your highest self & Andrea

Dear Purpose Driven Beings,
Purpose Driven Beings
Purpose Driven Beings

I’ve written this post three times and deleted it three times. I want to get this one just ‘right’. You know when you have something you really believe in and want to make sure you convey it with the right conviction and passion that people will hear you? This is like that.

Then I woke up early this morning and was sitting with my journal, listening to the birdsong outside my window and thought, "You know, a bird doesn't question her song, she just sings. How can more of us just sing?"

And I knew exactly what I wanted to write today. This is for my fellow purpose-driven beings.

Do we all have a purpose? Yes. Do we all want to act it out? No. But oh how I wish you would. So today's article is for those of you who do want to act on their purpose...but are terribly afraid.

You know who you are.

You can feel it brewing beneath the surface. Maybe you've had some experience of your purpose already or have seen it play out a little in your life. Maybe you're totally aligned with your purpose or are evolving it as we speak. No matter where you are with it, you have this unwavering feeling in you that you just can't shake and I urge you not to.

I'll be totally honest - I need to read this article today so I decided to write it.

My work has grown exponentially this year. Not just physically with clients and students but also in what I do, how I serve, what I write about, and what I dream about. <--- this is the one that really gets me.

What I dream about.

This is what I dream about... That all of my fellow purpose-driven, soulpreneur, passionate, aligned, open-hearted, conscious peeps would do two powerful things:

1) Get out of their own way 2) Play BIG

And yes, in this order. First, let's address getting out of your own way.

And because there is no quote that sums this up as well as this I give you Marianne Williamson -

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Read this. And then read it again. And again. Pause on this - "It is our light, not our darkness that most frighten's us..."

Fear. Most of us equate purpose with fear.

What if I fail miserably at this? What if I can't see all the parts, where do I even begin? What if no one thinks my purpose is worthy or valuable? Who am I to pursue my purpose?

Sound familiar? This was my narrative too before I turned toward my purpose.

We ALL have a purpose or a calling. Think of it as this truth embedded in the DNA of your soul. When it gets turned on you’re called to something in your life that, if followed, will lead you to the highest version you can live of your life.

This purpose can be many things. Here are a few examples:

  • More purposeful work
  • To become a parent
  • To move or travel
  • To start a non-profit
  • To write
  • To paint
  • To play music
  • To climb a mountain
  • To find God
  • To adopt
  • To forgive
  • And the list goes on…

Your purpose is already there – are you listening for it?

It’s an unspoken thing you can feel in your gut. It’s a sense that you’re missing out on something big in your life. Oh, and it probably sounds terrifying to pursue. Clients often say to me, “How do I know what my purpose is?” And I always answer with this, “I know you know what it is. The better question is, what are you afraid of by turning toward it?

It isn’t likely that you just don’t know. You know. It’s the idea of actually doing something about your calling that is very scary. Of course it’s scary! Answering your call means…

  • Moving WAY out of your comfort zone
  • Accepting that your calling won’t fit into your life as it is now
  • Challenging what you believe to be absolutely true about who you are

It’s no wonder answering your call requires bravery!

Today I want to share a few stories of this kind of bravery. The kind of bravery playing big beckons from us. My hope is that these stories will act as little nudges to help you turn toward and even answer your purpose. One is about someone I haven’t actually met but admire her conviction. One is about a client who’s given me permission to share his story. And one is about me and what happened when I answered my calling.

“MAYBE THERE’S A WAY OUT OF THE CAGE WHERE YOU LIVE MAYBE ONE OF THESE DAYS YOU CAN LET THE LIGHT IN SHOW ME HOW BIG YOUR BRAVE IS

AND LET THE WORDS FALL OUT SAY WHAT YOU WANNA SAYHONESTLY I WANNA SEE YOU BE BRAVE WITH WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY AND LET THE WORDS FALL OUT HONESTLY I WANNA SEE YOU BE BRAVE”-SARA BAREILLES

There is a woman who answered her calling and it put her on a quest that challenged her entire life. Her name is Elizabeth Gilbert. You may know her from her book, Eat Pray Love or Big Magic. You might have a very strong opinion about her journey, her book, or her message. No matter your thoughts put them down for a moment and let’s look at the bones of what she did.

She felt something deep within her life that just wasn’t right. She hand picked her entire life, she was present for every decision. Her work, her marriage, and her dreams. Yet one night, walking around her home in the dark, she just knew it was all wrong. She didn’t know what was right just yet.

It’s easier to feel what’s out of place because we haven’t made space yet for what fits better.

Then she did something even she couldn’t believe – she turned toward her calling and let it fill in the blanks. Although terrified, she left her marriage, left her home, and left her life as she knew it to embark on a year-long journey around the world. And she found the life that was perfectly designed for her already

THERE ARE ALWAYS REASONS TO DENY YOUR CALL. LEARN WHAT’S CALLING YOU, LEAVE THE REST TO THE UNIVERSE.

There is a man who is answering his calling one day at a time and he’s finding each day to fit just a little more perfectly. This is the story of a client of mine. I’ll call him John. When John first came to work with me he was in over his head. He had embarked on a business that felt right at the time but slowly it stopped fitting who he was. He wanted so badly to take care of everyone in his life that he never turned toward himself and asked what it was he really wanted.

Until it started to make him feel lost, sad, and sick. Answering your calling will feel oddly effortless.

John slowly started to peel back the layers of his ideal life and where he wasn’t living in alignment with his vision. It turned out what he really wants is to be motivational speaker and a healer. Opportunities were already knocking on his door (yes, this does actually happen) and he was turning them down out of fear that it would rock his current life too much.

Answering your calling will pull you in a direction you are not already headed. In other words – it will ask you to change directions. And fast.

The tipping point is when not answering your calling is more painful than just doing it. John let go of who he thought he was so that who he is could show him the way. In the end, it wasn’t as scary as he anticipated. In fact, it’s the easiest path he’s ever navigated.

“WE MUST BE WILLING TO LET GO OF THE LIFE WE PLANNED SO AS TO HAVE THE LIFE THAT IS WAITING FOR US.” – JOSEPH CAMPBELL

This last story is about a woman who didn’t know she had a calling until it knocked her sideways. This is my story. I’ve shared bits and pieces here and here. Today I’ll give you a short summary that has taken me more than two years to comprehend. Sometimes you have to go with the flow, ask questions later. I had two wake-up calls 6 months apart to the day. The first, a spiritual breakdown, and the second, a life breakthrough. The thing is, I was pretty content before my calling came knocking on my door.

My life was good. Good job, good friends, good relationship. All things happy in their place. Sure I had questions and quiet wonderings about what life was really about. Was there a purpose I wasn’t fulfilling? Why am I here? What is the point?

Until you answer your calling these questions are crazy making. After you answer your calling these questions are irrelevant.

I’ve always known I was intuitive and had a natural gift for hearing and serving people. When I see people hurting I can’t help but go to them. Then on January 8th, 2014 it all came full circle when God tapped me on the back. Growing up atheist this was a bit…alarming. It sent me into a spiral of questions, books, mentors, guides, and late night journal writing. Turning toward your calling will have you questioning so much. Let the questions come – just don’t get hung up on the answers.

This wake-up call set me up for my second calling when I realized I wasn’t working on purpose. After God said hello I knew I was meant to help others lean into their higher selves, reconnect with their soul, and let go of their fears.

Answering your calling brings a sharp amount of clarity we can spend our whole lives searching for. Just like that…there it is.

It would be another 1 1/2 years before I was ready to really own this. Well, I’m still working on it. Each day I ease a little more into my calling. It’s still scary. Here’s the thing about self-enlightenment – once you see and feel the light, going back into the dark feels like dying. Even when scared, uncertain, or lost I keep going because life makes perfect sense to me now.

SO YES, I WANT YOU TO BE BRAVE.

There is no greater purpose for you than to answer your calling. That silent tug on your heart? Tune into it. Listen to what it has for you. Ask what it knows.

No one knows how it will turn out. You can't know. So put the desire to have all the answers up front aside for a moment and ask yourself the following -

What do I WANT? For what PURPOSE? WHO do I need to BE? What is the ESSENCE of my purpose? (aka how could it make me FEEL?)

This is your business because no matter what purpose you're driven to create in the world or your world - it starts with you. Your heart. Your soul. What makes you come alive. The only how you need to worry about is how you CHOOSE to play big.

Don’t follow the easier path because you don’t know how to play big.Play big and watch yourself growth into the person you need to be TO play that big.

I promise you this – your purpose will not find the fullest expression it possibly can from a place of fear, lack, or scarcity. It can’t exist as its fully expanded self from your lower self.

Only your higher self can actualize your purpose. And your higher self deals in love.

Don’t pursue your purpose from the step you’re on today Purse it from where in your heart you believe you can go. I dare you to get big, be bold, grow, be a visionary, and love your life and work to the degree that it is the perfect expression of what it was always meant to be. And then…get out of the way.

In light and love, Andrea

The L Word
Love
Love

I had something else planned for today and after editing and revisiting that article for three days I threw it away. Because something else was more ready to be written and it was staring me in the face this whole time (see the photo above!). This theme has also been presented to me by three incredible women over the course of a couple months. Three different people. Three different meetings. One single message - can you fall in love with what is?

Then the book I finally picked up (see below) confirmed these three separate occasions and their now BIG place in my life. So the answer is...I'm working on it. (I'm one day in so it might take me a moment...)

My initial answer was 'no way!' Hear me out...

How can I love hate? How can I love suffering? How can I love pain? How can I love disease? How can I love racism? How can I love poverty? And the list goes on....

If I love what is am I not just throwing my hands up in the air and saying, 'Sorry...can't help you.'? Because this simply was not an option. This is why I'm a helper. A healer. A guide. A teacher. And this list could also go on.

I know I am not alone in this - if I love what is then what exactly am I doing here? This was really the question I needed an answer to. Because I have navigated my entire life around the idea that I incarnated to serve. To help. To heal. So...does this mean I am out of a job? Well. Yes, in a way.

Let me back up to these three women and their three messages.

The first woman I met with is a fellow intuitive and healer.  We resonated right away - one of those conversations that I could have had for hours and hours. And in the midst of us talking I shared with her that as an empath I am often sick. That I walk around and 'see' so much pain and then I am in pain.

To which she replied - "How do you know they're in pain?"

And I said, "Because I can't imagine they're happy."

And then she said that thing that knocked me sideways - "You aren't absorbing their pain you are creating it yourself in yourself out of your judgment of what you assume someone else is experiencing. But what you're missing is this - whatever is being experienced in the world is the perfect expression of what it is. Can you love what is?"

The second woman I met with is also an intuitive, a teacher, and a writer. I shared with her a bit about my dilemma around allowing things to be as they are and then what does that mean for me as a helper? To which she replied, "You aren't here to save anyone."

And I, confused, asked, "Then why do I have these intuitive gifts? Why do I feel called to serve"

And she said the second thing that knocked me sideways - "You aren't here to help in the way you think. You can't hold space for people and 'take their pain away'. They are already being held. What holds the sun and the stars and the moon and beats your heart? You are here to simply BE. Be love. Be present. Be empathetic. Be aware. But fall in love with this human life because it is perfection as it is. Can you love what is?"

So....then I meet with the third woman. A woman who is my mentor and very dear friend. Someone I know came into my life to be a wise guide and support for my growth.  We were having a casual conversation about all of these recent revelations and my now major confusion. Is being enough? Can letting people fall on their face really be a good thing? But people are hurting and they don't need to, what of this?

Over the phone, I am asking these questions and she says so calmly the third thing that knocks me sideways - "Can you remember a time in your life of great pain? A time that really was difficult, a time that changed you?

"Of course", I replied. And then she says....

"If you could, would you change it?"

"Actually, no. That experience made me who I am, and in a way I am beyond grateful for it. It taught me compassion, awareness, love, patience, kindness, and self-respect...." I start to ramble, and then she says the zinger -

"What if someone had 'saved' you from something they felt 'you shouldn't have to experience'. Wouldn't they be robbing you of the very thing you needed to become who you're meant to be? Can you love what is?"

So here's where this all leaves me...life doesn't happen TO us. It happens FOR us. Is suffering inevitable? Yes, I believe it is.

For what purpose? To learn. To grow. To understand. To evolve our soul.

Being here is a gift and you chose it. You chose your life, your experience, your people, your teachers, and all that beautiful mess in the middle.

So my practice now, and I invite you to this as well, is this - get curious.

And my purpose? Your purpose? It is just as powerful and just as mission-driven as it always was. But instead of 'helping', or 'healing', I am here when you decide TO get curious. TO look at the labels, assumptions, and lessons of your life and look at what they point to. To support you in loving this splendid experience here.

And to help you ask yourself, "Can I love what is?"

In light and love, Andrea

Let joy become your compass
let joy be your compass
let joy be your compass

I was watching the season finale of 'Super Soul Sunday' this morning as Oprah interviewed Jack Canfield. His parting wisdom was this - "Your passions are your purpose and joy is your guide."Thank you, Jack Canfield. And I couldn't agree more. Joy is your guide. Or at least, it should be.

For me, joy is a resonance. It's a form of vibration and I can feel when I'm in alignment because I feel joy all throughout my being. A recent choice for me is that if it doesn't bring my joy I am not doing it. It's far harder to point at what brings us joy than it is to feel our way through it.

This is how resonance works - it's one form energy can take. When you resonate with something it means you're vibrating at the same frequency as that thing. It feels amazing.

I am asked a lot some version of this question, "how will I know I am on the right path?" Because it will feel good. Period.

And yet I see, more often than not, people stressing out, grinding it out, burning out...all in the name of following their bliss. This is a sign that something isn't quite right.

Stress in any form is an indicator, a signal, that you're applying a form of pressure to your life that isn't serving you. Anxiety is when you don't trust where you're headed. Stress is when you aren't en-JOYing where you are.

This isn't to assume there won't be challenges. There will always be a challenge of some sort because it's in the contrast of the challenge we grow and step into even more joy. But a challenge shouldn't make life feel hard.

I see people making life far harder than it needs to be. Yes. Making - As in choosing to follow the difficulty rather than the possibility. Although this is often not conscious, it is still a choice.

Instead, ask bolder questions of your life. And really listen to what's there. You want to feel good. Your brain, body, and spirit are always in search of joy.

Ask yourself -

  • If I could live my ideal life what would I be doing?
  • What limiting beliefs or fears would I have to put down?
  • What dreams do I have?
  • How am I keeping my dreams from fulfillment?

This year, and all years, I invite you to think about what the essence is you're in search of. Why pursue more money? Why be healthy? Why love? Why answer your calling? Why search and seek the corners of your spirit?

I have immense hope that there will come a day, not too far in the future when we will all go within. When we will do the thing that creates joy in our life and in our soul. And that when we do we will stop looking outside ourselves for what is already inside.

Our worthiness. Our right to happiness. Wealth. Contentment. Pride. Forgiveness. Compassion. And understanding.

That when we do this we will stop seeing the world through scarcity or fear of not enough. We will stop competing and start collaborating. And we will start trusting our intuition and listen to the whisper of our heart. The voice that is sharing with us all day, every day, which step to take next.

For then, and only then. will we see what we're truly capable of. Then, and only then, will God/Source/Consciousness get to experience the fullness of It through the fullness of us. This is co-creation and it is built on joy.

Love and light, Andrea

Your Roots ARE Your Fruits
Fruits and Roots Andrea Leda

I want to share an incredible story today about a woman I get to call a client. She inspires me every single week.

Not just because she shows up and does the work but because she reminds me what is possible when we dig into the depths of who we are…and open a new door.

Before I get to her story let’s talk about this a little - What does it mean to dig into our depths?

First, here’s a little myth I had to learn the hard way. Changing something that’s going wrong in your life isn’t about simply closing the gap.

But you’ve been taught this, right?

Me too. In fact I think this definition of change is even in the International Coach Federation’s description of coaching. Something to this effect – success ishelping you close the gap between where you are and where you desire to be.

Here’s the thing – change isn’t horizontal. It’s vertical. Let me explain.

Closing the gap is external. For example – trying a new strategy for growing your business or building a new plan for staying healthy. These are two things outside of you.

Now I agree that change can occur here. You can alter how you do something and experience a different result.

But I don’t think you want to merely alter something. I think you’re ready to experience a transformation in your life.

This might be a stretch but think about it – why do we hire a therapist? Work with a coach? Attend a life-changing conference? Read the trendy self-help books? Take classes on meditation and prayer? Build in rituals?

We don’t embark on these things to alter single habits like eating chocolate or fighting with our spouse.

We embark on these because we’re searching for an easier, more fulfilling, and peaceful way to live our life.

This isn’t a minor change – it’s a calling from the Self and the Soul to dramatically shift how we do life!

Something that radically shifts how you see yourself and the world, which creates, not just a new result, a whole new way of living.

Transformation is vertical. Transformation requires you to go into the depths of who you are and ask questions like:

What does ‘playing big’ mean to me?

What great impact am I here to create?

What self-limiting stories are on repeat?

What does total fulfillment look and feel like?

What is so compelling about the way I live my life?

What scares me?

What inspires me?

Even if you answer one question – answer it.

If you do this I can promise you that you’ll discover a glimpse of your depth - the things that make you, you.

I call this depth your roots. And this I know for sure -

FRUITS AND ROOTS
FRUITS AND ROOTS

The Roots you plant are the Fruits you reap. Most of us begin doing change work on the Fruits - we employ new strategies for more money, happier partnerships, more successful businesses, motivation and fulfillment.

But what's possible if you dug, just a little, into your roots?

Imagine what it would it feel like to be able to totally surrender…to be able to slow down, breath, and create a life that is meaningful and deeply satisfying...

Imagine if you could create a business from peace of mind and not begin with burn our or marketing strategies...

Imagine totally trusting that money flows to you...

This happens in your roots.

Here is what I believe to be true with the entire essence of my being and every fiber in my body -  Change your root, shift what you plant, and you’ll never have to struggle with the details again.

Big promise, I know.

Let me share this story now about a client. I’ll call her Lisa. Lisa is like so many women – her story is significant because it demonstrates the power in going into our roots.

Lisa came to me just before the first leaf fell this fall wanting to radically grow her business.

Lisa is a healer and a recovery coach. She is a single mom with two awesome children. She loves her work and is in her purpose lane. Success wasn’t new for her but she was in a rut. She felt something big was on the horizon…but how to get there?

I describe Lisa as on-purpose, intuitive, and curious. She's a go-getter, hard-working, independent, and intelligent. Lisa is an empath, a nurturer, and searching for something bigger than her.

She had talked to several other coaches about strategy and goals for making some big changes in the coming months.

Then she came to me. Here’s the thing – I don’t do strategy.

In our first two hours together I shared with her that no strategy or goal would compensate for a story that was no longer serving her.

This story was one of her roots and she was seeing the fruits of this every day.

The old root story: “It’s not safe to be on my own.”

This story may be so simple. But as we peeled back the layers she discovered how this story was not allowing her to be the incredible recovery coach and business owner she could be. It was keeping her business from thriving and ultimately her life from ease.

We never talked about action steps. We never coached around new ideas. We never discussed growth tactics.

We let go of the story and wrote a different one.She planted a new root. And then something that even surprised me happened.

She organically and effortlessly grew her business…

  • Lisa’s revenue increased by 400% in less than 90 days.
  • Her transformative coaching program received plenty of applicant’s and she had to turn people away.
  • She ended a toxic relationship safely and confidently.
  • She de-cluttered her entire home, painted furniture, and made her space a place that inspired her for the first time in her life.

The most remarkable part - She now practices the art of surrender and allowing everyday. She is at peace.

Here’s the magical part – we never talked about strategies for any of her new success. She created this 100% on her own because we planted a new root!

Her new root grew into fruits of money, collaboration, peace, and safety.

I’ve never met a single human being who doesn’t have a story that isn’t interfering with the greatest and grandest version of their life. A root that is not producing the kind of fruit you want -

If you want better relationships, more money, better health, successful business, happiness....Then let's dive into your stories, beliefs, habits, purpose, fear, and self-worth.

Most of us try pruning the tree when we need to have a look at what we’ve planted. What if you could create the kind of results Lisa did with one story, one root?

If you want me to help you do this see my gift for 10 of my readers below!

Much love and light, Andrea

P.S.  Feel welcome to download the 'Roots & Fruits' image here! Share it, save it, pin it up. Big Thank You to T. Harv Eker who originally introduced me to this concept.

What does it mean to 'Stop Pushing'?
beach walk
beach walk

As I mentioned above I spent the first four days of October in my most favorite place - the Oregon Coast. Specifically Manzanita. A tiny town just off Hwy 101. If you don't see the small flashing red light when the highway bends you'll miss the town. But it's there and it's simplicity is such an invitation to me to slow down and breath.

I took a huge leap of faith - I rented a (very large) home right on the ocean (well, not on, but pretty close!) and invited 10 conscious leaders and service providers to join me. This was officially my first retreat.

I called it my experiment. An experiment in what would happen if I brought together a group of people all asking this question - How do I serve my purpose and get out of the way?

The answer to this experiment was...magic happens.

Now I get that this is a bold statement but I don't have many more words to describe what happened. I didn't have a schedule or an agenda. I left room for awesome food (Thank you Lionfish Supper Club) and of course space to walk the beach and hike Neahkahnie Mountain.

I did the most uncomfortable thing I've ever done with a group - I left space for the event to create itself. Thus began the theme of the weekend to stop pushing.

Here's my understanding of what this means (and it's still flushing itself out):

Show up. Just show up. Don't try and prove anything or push an agenda. Be open to what's already available to you.

Let it be easy. I, like many, am a professional at making things far harder than they need to be. It's so easy to 'add more value' a.k.a. try and do too much.

Do the thing that feels the best. This could be giving yourself permission to go the direction you actually want. This could also simply be doing the thing that actually feeds your soul. This weekend fed my soul BIG time. As I told my coach (who attended!!) "This is my jam...I could do this all day long.' What's your jam?

Get out of your own way. I am also a professional at getting IN my own way. You know, doing my work through my doubts or listening to my intuition and then doing the opposite. I know we all get in our own way - it's inevitable AND again, what if you let it be easy?

Mostly what this weekend taught me was that I don't have to try and be something. Yes, I enjoy learning and growing and carving out space to improve my work. I encourage you to do the same. An artist doesn't stop with finger painting. They get curious and pick up a brush and keep learning.

But here's what I think the difference is, you can improve your practice without trying to 'be more' or 'do more'.

I also just finished 'The War of Art' and 'Turning Pro' by Steven Pressfield. What an awesome follow up to the weekend.

He so clearly showed me that as an 'artist answering her calling' it's so easy to take ownership of that art and try and make it perfect before sharing it with the world. But it isn't yours to own. He says that we employ our gifts for the sake of sharing them with others.

I am still wrapping my head around this. If you read his books please reach out so we can talk about them!

In closing, what I watched transpire over these 4-days were 10 people AWARE that they have something to gift the world and wanting to do it in a way that serves all involved.

No easy feat but I am so grateful they showed up. Because we all benefit from people tuning in. Don't you think?

In light, love, joy, and success, Andrea

Gut check.
gut check by andrea leda
gut check by andrea leda

Why hello there. It's been a little bit since I've poured my thoughts onto this canvas here. Truth: I've been journaling, traveling, and having the best conversations because I needed a little soul love. Well, I'm back. And things are going to be a bit different from here on out. I love coming full circle. It happens to me a lot actually. Do you ever find that the thing you loved and moved away from (ie. work, hobbies, style, books, topics, etc.) you inevitably find a way to bring back into your life? Well I do this. A lot.

Let's call it a 'gut check.' It's that moment when you say to yourself, or awkwardly out loud, "Oh. I get it now." And that moment is a bit of a relief because I can finally surrender my hard search for what was within me all along. Doh.

And still I LOVE this because when the circle connects again and I return 'home' in my life I come back to myself with tons of experience, more wisdom, beautiful people, and belief in what's possible.

I've had a whirlwind of a year. Ever have those? But really, it's been a whirlwind of six years. You see, six years ago I turned down graduate school for the second time and decided to leave a blank path of possibility in my future. Good idea? I'm not sure.

School was my safety net. It was my path to career and worth. It was where someone else was going to tell me what I was meant to do and how. I turned it down because...my gut told me to.

Fast forward six years. I won't bore you with the details so here's a fun summary - there have been 5 business's, 3 not so successful, 2 incredibly successful, many blogs, many more blog posts, hundreds of books, and thousands of journal pages all in an attempt to answer these questions: Why am I here? What am I meant to do?

Have you ever asked these? Have you ever answered them?! If you have, tell me what you've discovered!

Well it's taken me 2,190 days to come up with this - I'm meant to listen and connect to people.

Were you expecting more? Me too, which is why it's taken me so long to trust my gut that this is simply who I am!

Now I'm hungry to just do the work. Yes, just do the work. Because it's so simple.

What are you hungry for? What is calling to you? What is asking more of you than you know how to be? Where are you ready to expand?

For me it's inviting motivated, driven, and visionary women entrepreneurs to work with me. Why? Because (and I think you'll agree with me):

  • You're answering your calling
  • You have a greater WHY than yourself
  • You have a vision, mission, and message to impart in the world
  • You are driven and inspired
  • You want to achieve mastery and significance

I could keep going. It came down to this - you are going to show up, do the work, and get out of your own way. For this I thank you. The world needs you. You still have hope that making a difference is a viable way to spend your time and energy. Me too.

I recently read through this list: 100 Women in Wellness to Watch

As I read through I realized these women are on this list because they are DARING to BE, DO, and REACH something greater than themselves. Doesn't this inspire you? Maybe one of these women is you! Or will be. Or you want it to be.

"At any given moment, you have the power to say: This is not how the story is going to end."

- Christine Mason Miller

IF you do THEN I want to be the woman in your corner supporting you in making this possible. No one breaks barriers or re-writes her-story alone. It requires connection, conversation, validation, being challenged, accountability, inspiration, and good ol' fashioned love from someone who believes in YOU.

Don't spend six years as I did. Take a gut check. Then dive in. Because deciding to take the world by storm is Step 0. Step 1? Take action.

Trust your gut,

Andrea

The time for this is now...
How to change the conversation
How to change the conversation

"Once you willingly embrace that seemingly broken part - you become whole." - Tosha Silver

This quote found me yesterday as I was reading 'Change Me Prayers' (read it!) It hit on a question I've been pondering for awhile now - is it time for a different therapeutic conversation? And I think the answer is YES.

Just the other day my wife and I were perusing a bookstore and per usual I found myself browsing the 'self-help' section when something blatantly caught my attention. The section title on the top of the bookshelf no longer read 'Self-Help' and in its place was this - 'Living Your Best Life'. I did my best not to jump up and down in the aisle but I was really excited about this! So the conversation has already begun to shift.

Shift how? From a conversation about how broken you are to a conversation about how divinely human you are.Now it isn't as simple as speaking affirmations, praying, or embracing your strengths. All awesome practices but they forego looking at your roots or your personal truths.

I strongly feel we need something in the middle. We need something between embracing our traumas and cultivating our passion. We need something that blends understanding our past and simply moving forward.

We can't forget where we come from because it is quite literally how you see the world.

We can't just move on expecting things to magically be different.

Where is the middle ground? How do we do both/and? How do you give respect to where you come from and let yourself dream about where you want to go? How do you keep one from defining the other?

The traditional therapeutic conversation has one BIG wall - it assumes you're broken and need to be fixed.

The traditional coaching conversation has one BIG wall - it pretends you were born today and just want to move forward.

You can't live in the past. You can't just magically live a completely different life.

SO if you want to change your life, stretch your comfort zone, take a leap, heal, dream, or forgive - Where do you turn?

I don't actually have an answer for you. I more or less am just starting to ask this question myself. I bring this up because as I lean into the fullness of my work I'm seeing some pretty strong themes. I get to see the most incredible strengths in my clients and I get to be there to hold space when things are hard. It's an honor and it begs that the conversation support what's really needed.

Here's what I have so far...

  • You want a healthy, intentional, conscious, loving, and accepting relationship with your SELF.
  • You want to understand, heal from, and release any story, fear, resentment, or unresolved part of your life. You may never forget, and you don't need to, but you want to learn and bring your lessons to your life to serve your highest good.
  • You want clarity and direction around what it is you DO want for your life and to trust in yourself to make it happen.
  • You want to grant yourself permission to understand, try on, and play with the pieces of yourself you've kept hidden or quiet.
  • You're willing to practice vulnerability but it's a bit scary and you aren't sure how to stay safe in turning toward the more vulnerable parts of your life.
  • At the end of the day you want to be happy. You don't necessarily want to be defined by your wounds and you don't always want to strive for improvement.
  • You get that life is a constant ebb and flow and you want to move with the natural flow of your life. You see that it can't always be perfect and at the same time it doesn't need to hurt.

What do you think about this list? Doing the work and examining your life is SO fulfilling. I wish this for everyone. I mean a real, raw examination of your beliefs, your fears, your desires, your losses, and your plans. And I beg that you don't go through this alone.

I believe now after 5 years as a coach, hundreds of hours of education, and almost 1,000 hours of conversations with my clients this I know to be true - you want to be seen, heard, understood, and above all else, LOVED.

You want to know you matter.

You want to do the work and sometimes you want to quit. I honor both because it's all part of the process!

I believe this is what is really means to answer your calling. It means to let all the contents of your life spill out before you. To keep what you love, to release what you don't, to trust and have faith in yourself, and to really explore why you're here. Explore who you are and what you are. Step into the pieces of you that terrify you AND inspire you at the same time.

This I can promise - when you do, you will literally be AH-mazed by life.

Changing this conversation can't just be done as your coach - it's a co-created experience. I invite you to help me change the conversation. I've put together a very short survey and I would LOVE and greatly appreciate your insight. Click the link below and let's do this!

I want you to be brave...
answer your calling part two
answer your calling part two

When I shared the first part in this series on answering your call I promised to share 5 reasons to answer you call today. Well, I have something even better for you. And it has to do with you being brave. Remember on Monday I pointed out that answering your call means the following?

  • Moving WAY out of your comfort zone
  • Accepting that your calling won’t fit into your life as it is now
  • Challenging what you know to be absolute about who you are

It's no wonder answering your call requires...bravery. Today I'll share a few stories of this kind of bravery. My hope is that these stories will act as little nudges to help you turn toward and even answer your calling.

One is about someone I haven't actually met but admire her conviction. One is about a client who's given me permission to share his story. And one is about me and what happened when I answered my calling.

"Maybe there's a way out of the cage where you live Maybe one of these days you can let the light in Show me how big your brave is

Say what you wanna say And let the words fall out Honestly I wanna see you be brave With what you want to say And let the words fall out Honestly I wanna see you be brave"

-Sara Bareilles

There is a woman who answered her calling and it put her on a quest that challenged her entire life. Her name is Elizabeth Gilbert. You may know her from her book, Eat Pray Love or her Super Soul Sunday appearance. You might have a very strong opinion about her journey, her book, or her message. No matter your thoughts put them down for a moment and let's look at the bones of what she did.

She felt something deep within her life that just wasn't right. She hand picked her entire life, she was present for every decision. Her work, her marriage, and her dreams. Yet one night, walking around her home in the dark, she just knew it was all wrong. She didn't know what was right just yet. It's easier to feel what's out of place because we haven't made space yet for what fits better.

Then did something even she couldn't believe - she turned toward her calling and let it fill in the blanks. Although terrified she left her marriage, left her home, and left her life as she knew it to embark on a year-long journey around the world. And she found the life that was perfectly designed for her.

There are always reasons to deny your call. Learn what's calling you, leave the rest to the Universe.

There is a man who is answering his calling one day at a time and he's finding each day to fit just a little more perfectly. This is the story of a client of mine. I'll call him John. When John first came to work with me he was in over his head. He had embarked on a business that felt right at the time but slowly it stopped fitting who he was. He wanted so badly to take care of everyone in his life that he never turned toward himself and what it was he really wanted. Until it started to make him feel lost, sad, and sick. Answering your calling will feel oddly effortless.

John slowly started to peel back the layers of his ideal life and where he wasn't living in conjunction with his vision. It turned out what he really wants is to be motivational speaker. Opportunities were already knocking on his door (yes, this does sometimes happen) and he was turning them down out of fear that it would rock his current life too much.

Answering your calling will pull you in a direction you are not already headed. Just talking about sharing his story lit him up. The tipping point is when not answering your calling is more painful than just doing it. John let go of who he thought he was so that who he is could show him the way. In the end it wasn't as scary as he anticipated. In fact, it's the easiest path he's ever navigated.

"We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us." - Joseph Campbell

This last story is about a woman who didn't know she had a calling until it knocked her sideways. This is my story. I've shared bits and pieces here and here. Today I'll give you a short summary that has taken me more than a year to comprehend. Sometimes you have to go with the flow, ask questions later. I had two wake up calls 6 months apart to the day. The first a spiritual breakdown, the second a life breakthrough. The thing is, I was pretty content before my calling came knocking on my door.

My life was good. Good job, good friends, good relationship. All things happy in their place. Sure I had questions and quiet wonderings about what life was really about. Was there a purpose I wasn't fulfilling? Why am I here? What is the point? Until you answer your calling these questions are crazy making. After you answer your calling these questions are irrelevant.

I've always known I was intuitive and had a natural gift for hearing and healing people. When I see people hurting I can't help but go to them. Then on January 8th, 2014 it all came full circle when God tapped me on the back. Growing up atheist this was a bit...alarming. It sent me into a spiral of questions, books, mentors, guides, and late night journal writing. Turning toward your calling will have you questioning so much. Let the questions come - just don't get hung up on the answers.

This wake-up call set me up for my second calling when I realized I wasn't working on purpose. After God said hello I knew I was meant to help others lean into their higher selves, reconnect with their soul, and let go of their fears. Answering your calling brings a sharp amount of clarity we can spend our whole lives searching for. Just like that...there it is.

It would be another eight months before I was ready to really own this. Well, I'm still working on it. Each day I ease a little more into my calling. It's still scary. Here's the thing about self-enlightenment - once you see and feel the light, going back into the dark feels like dying. Even when scared, uncertain, or lost I keep going because it fits perfectly.

So yes, I want YOU to be brave.

There is no greater purpose for you than to answer your calling.

That silent tug on your heart?

Tune into it.

Listen to what it has for you.

Ask what it knows.

Set down your need to know it all, for a comfortable answer, or for the pieces to all fit together. They simple won't.

What do you have to lose? The better question is - what are you already losing by not answering your calling?

In light and love,

Andrea

Answer your Calling - Part One
answer your calling part one
answer your calling part one

Last year I answered a calling. You can read my favorite post about it here. Does everyone have one? Should you answer your calling? The answer to these questions is 'Yes!' So maybe the more important questions are - what is a calling? How will I know when it's beckoning me? Today I'll answer these questions using my own experience AND later this week I'll share 5 Reasons to Answer the Call. There is one constant when you hear your calling - it just might terrify you. Ok, there's no might about. It will scare you. My hope is that this article will ease that just enough that you feel inspired to turn toward this incredible experience.

Your calling may have nothing to do with your work - this is important to point out because I think this can be confusing. As my dear friend and coach Michael Knouse recently said to me over coffee, "Your calling is this great offering you bring to the world. And that offering should never be ignored no matter the way it shows up."

Let's begin with this question - What is a calling?

I'm going to answer this the absolute best I can. This is based on my own experience, the experiences of my clients, and that every spiritual text says the same thing about your calling. We ALL have a calling. Think of it as this truth embedded in the DNA of your soul. When it gets turned on you're called to something in your life that if followed will lead you to the highest version you can live of your life.

This calling can be many things. Here are a few examples:

  • More purposeful work
  • To become a parent
  • To move or travel
  • To start a non-profit
  • To write
  • To paint
  • To play music
  • To climb a mountain
  • To find God
  • To adopt
  • To forgive
  • And the list goes on...

Your calling is already there - are you listening for it?

How will I know when it's beckoning me?

In my experience you just know. It's an unspoken thing you can feel in your gut. It's a sense that you're missing out on something big in your life. Oh, and it probably sounds terrifying to bring into the light. Clients often say to me, "How do I know what my calling is?" And I always answer with this, "I know you know what it is. The better question is, what are you afraid of by turning toward it?"

It isn't likely that you just don't know. You know. It's the idea of actually doing something about your calling that is very scary. Of course it's scary! Answering your call means...

  • Moving WAY out of your comfort zone
  • Accepting that your calling won't fit into your life as it is now
  • Challenging what you know to be absolute about who you are

12 Reasons why YOU matter
12 Reasons why you matter
12 Reasons why you matter

Of all the things I can do more my clients the #1 most effective tool I have is also the most simple. It's to remind you that you matter. Did you know this? If not let me tell you - of course you matter! More than you can possibly imagine. So why is it that so many are living as though they never mattered less? I invite you to take this post to heart today. Share it. Re-post is. Send it to those you love. Get on the 'I Matter!' bandwagon.

I can take TWO approaches to my work. One is to find out all the things that are going horribly. The OTHER is to remind you of all your strength and your core Self. I'm sad to admit this - the former can be easier. We all live in a 'woundology' culture. We all have PhD's in our wounds. We are the first to remind those we meet, those we've known forever, and those in between about everything we've endured in our life.

We relate based on our wounds and we connect through similar wound stories. What is a wound? Any trauma. All trauma. Accidents, breakups, abandonment, phobias, loss, grief, and fear. Now I have to say this - your wounds are valid. They happened and they're part of your story. Not because you endured them but because you learned something and you grew!

The problem is when we choose our wounds to guard, inhibit, or protect over us prohibiting our life from thriving and flourishing!

I have never worked with a client who wasn't using a wound to stay trapped. I've done the same thing. These stories are our comfort and although they are painful and awful to keep around we stop knowing how to be without them defining our life.

So stop trying to forget them, let them go, or abandon their memory. They thrive on the energy and attention you give them. They stay alive to the extent you keep them alive. The solution? Turn toward your light.

Struggle is inevitable. Suffering is a choice. Do MORE of the things that remind you how much you matter and LESS of the things that keep you in pain. Yes, it is really this simple.

To help you do this I want to gift you 12 Reasons Why YOU Matter. These are based on my own life and my experiences. Please change or edit them to fit you perfectly. You know your strengths. Are you using them? It doesn't take any more energy to live through your awesomeness than it does your wounds. Only you can make this choice.

12 Reasons Why You Matter

I don't provide explanations because they really are this simple. All they require is acceptance.

Reason #1: You exist

Reason #2: You are here for a reason

Reason #3: You are love

Reason #4: You are part of the Whole

Reason #5: You are divine

Reason #6: You are energy

Reason #7: You are connected

Reason #8: You are wise

Reason #9: You have the truth

Reason #10: You are compassion

Reason #11: You're needed

Reason #12: You wanted to be here

My hope is that these 12 Reasons inspire you just enough that you see things differently today. Start there. Tomorrow when you wake up you can continue on the same path OR you can re-read these 12 Reasons....

Andrea

3 Simple Ways to Tune into your Intuition
3 simple ways to tune into your intuition
3 simple ways to tune into your intuition

As an intuitive I forget that tuning into your intuition isn't a given for everyone. Let me preface this by saying we are ALL intuitive. It's up to you how much you want to use your intuition, strengthen it, or rely on it. Today I offer you 3 Simple Ways to Tune into your Intuition. I'm starting here because before you can use it for all it's good for you need to see that it does in fact exist! What can you use your intuition for? Think of your intuition as your own internal navigation system. Like a GPS for your life. You can take your biggest questions and your biggest fears to your intuition and it will navigate the way. Now I must say this - your intuition works every single time whether you like the answers or not. It's power is in how much you trust it and take its guidance to heart.

It's not uncommon to ask your intuition for guidance and find doubt immediately seep in. Why? Because we humans LOVE concreteness. We've wired together concreteness with what you can see, hear, smell, taste, and touch. But what about what you can sense and feel? Where do these fit in?

This sixth sense is not as rational as the others so it's easy to disregard its truth. But I assure you - it's the most powerful tool you have at your disposal every single day. Why? Because you don't have to DO anything or GO anywhere. All you have to do is stop, tune in, and listen.

"Intuition is seeing with the soul." - Dean Koontz

Try each of these tools. One will work better for you than another. I personally like to use my journal and meditation for dialoguing with my intuition. My intuition always knows the most perfect path for me to take. Sometimes that path is messy and challenges me but this is part of life! As I mentioned before - you may not always love what your intuition has to say but this is ok. Listen anyway!

Journal with your intuition

One of my all time favorite journal techniques is to write a dialogue between myself and my intuition. It's really simple and always yields incredible results. Trust the process on this one. You start by writing a question for your intuition. Then write from your intuition's point of view - be your intuition's interpreter. Don't be surprised how well this technique works. You'll re-read your intuition's answers and find that you don't really recall writing that!

Tune into your gut feelings

Have you ever heard someone say, "I had a gut feeling"? The most common physical reaction to your intuition is in your gut. You may also feel your pulse quicken, your palms get sweaty, or lots of energy all of a sudden. This is because your intuition or 'gut reaction' can kick off a flight or fight reaction. These are all a byproduct of that reaction. What's responsible for this surge of sensation? Your adrenal gland is and it lives just above your kidneys. You literally get a 'gut feeling'. Tune into this! See how often over the next week your intuition signals go off.

Meditate

One of my most popular mediations I walk clients through is the Future Self-Meditation. Taught to me in my coach training this meditation can bring you a surge of answers and clarity by bringing you face-to-face with your future self for a conversation. You can buy this meditation here or you can book a Complimentary Power Chat and I'll personally walk you through a future-self mediation and an in-depth debrief.

Give your intuition the space to be! I think you'll be amazed at what it has to offer. I use my intuition everyday for decision making, business, relationships, and prosperity. Where should I take a leap? When do I need to tune back into my needs? We are all equipped with this internal wise-self. Enjoy the wisdom at your fingertips!

The best kept secret to life
BEST KEPT SECRET TO LIFE
BEST KEPT SECRET TO LIFE

People come to work with me for 3 BIG reasons - they want more of something in their life. They want more fulfillment, more groundedness (not technically a word, but you want more of it right?), and more joy. Some want ALL 3. Don't you want more of these things in your life? Well...there's a secret to achieving these. Before I tell you what it is I want to share a story with you.

I want to introduce you to someone dear to me - we'll call her Ally - and I'm willing to bet you have something major in common with her.

She, like so many, was simply unfulfilled. She wasn't unhappy, she just wasn't living the life she'd imagined for herself. She had a good job, it wasn't her dream job but it paid the bills and she didn't have to worry. She had nice hobbies and spent enough time taking care of her health. She was in a healthy relationship. She felt it was a bit predictable but she felt loved and needed and they still made one another laugh. She had a few goals and some dreams but wasn't acting on any of them. She called herself content.

Ally came to me because she was curious. She asked in our first meeting - "Am I missing something? I have so much good stuff in my life and yet I'm not thrilled or invested in it the way I crave to be."

"What is it you crave?", I asked her.

"Inspiration. Excitement. Growth. Purpose."

"What makes you think your life as it is can't provide these things?", I continued.

"Because...if I took more risks, traveled, maybe wrote a book, moved to a new city, had more adventure, brought my passions to life...then I'd be inspired, excited, growing, and on purpose."

"There's just one teeny, tiny, detail you missed...", I commented.

"What's that?"

"You can DO more, TRY more, EXPLORE more, and GO to new places. But remember, YOU have to bring yourself along."

"Ok...what do you mean?"

"Inspiration, excitement, growth, and purpose aren't out there...they're IN here. They are within the eye of the beholder. If you want fulfillment and joy every day choose to see, feel, expect, believe, trust, and be fulfilled and joyful everyday.

"How do I just choose these things without changing anything in my life?"

"Well...you're choosing right now for your life to not mean these things. It's no different. It's just a different choice."

You must stop trying to change what you are getting for yourself and go to work on changing what you are giving to yourself.

- Guy Finley, The Secret of Letting Go

Put more simply - the best kept secret to life is this: Stop doing and start BEING.

A flower is just a flower. You get to DECIDE if it's worth stopping to admire and smell or if you keep walking. How you do anything is how you do everything. If you don't stop and smell the flowers you won't stop and admire your success or enjoy an incredible meal or stop and soak up the sunshine.

All our unhappiness lies hidden in our ideas about who we are and how life should treat us.

How do you treat life? Life shows you incredible things everyday. Strangers smiling as you pass on the street. Fresh rain. A great cup of tea. Your child's laugh. You can't create these experiences, all you can do is acknowledge them. Is your life a means to get to the next venture or is your life THE venture? The beautiful thing is, you get to choose.

It isn't what you do that creates joy, it's who you are that allows joy into your life.

If you see an ugly world it's because you believe the world is ugly. If you see a beautiful world it's because you believe the world is beautiful. Like these ideas but want even more? Listen to my most recent call - The Power of your Unconscious Mind and download the journal prompts to go with.

Your perspective doesn't simply form an opinion about your life and the world around you - your perspective creates it.What are you building?

Want to know the secrets to fulfillment?
4-PATHS-TO-FULFILLMENT.jpeg

Secrets to fulfillmentLast week I wrote about the 4 Paths to Happiness. Happiness is found in letting go of everything in your life that doesn't bring you happiness. It's this simple. Now here's where it gets really interesting - negative emotions cannot live in the future. They are only in relation to the past. Negative emotions include anger, sadness, fear, grief, anxiety, and limiting beliefs. When you let go of a negative emotion you're freeing up your future to be the happy and joyful state you're meant to be, now.

Fulfillment is very similar. Let's break the word down. To be ful-filled is to be full of this things that bring you joy and not of the things that don't. More love, less hate. More joy, less anxiety. More happiness, less anger.

When you become right with your being, everything else falls into it's most right place

Part of conscious living is modeling successful behavior. Successful people take conscious and intentional action in their life in these 4 areas. They don't leave it to chance. Successful people understand that they are the literal creators of their fulfillment. Each path below comes from within. The lack of these in your life also comes from within.

The difference maker? YOU. Let's dive right in! Here are my 4 Paths of Fulfillment:

Happiness

What brings you joy? Remember my 4 ways to shift into happiness - you can be happy in this very moment when you let go of everything making you not happy. Quite simply: what brings you joy?

Connection

What gives you strength? What, when you're totally connected to it, gives you strength?

Purpose

What is the most authentic expression of yourself? What, when you're engaged with it, lights you up from the inside out?

Alignment

Alignment is the congruency of the three paths above. You live in alignment when your happiness, connection, and purpose are all working for you.

I've kept these short for a reason. These aren't complicated questions - their power lies in your response AND your taking action on what you respond with. If you know what brings you joy, makes you feel connected, and helps you express your soul and you aren't doing it then you don't achieve fulfillment.

Start with the one that means the most to you in this moment.

4 Ways to know if you're grounded
how-to-plant-strong-roots.jpeg

How to plant strong roots for changeHave you ever been frustrated trying to make a change stick?

Do you try new things or ideas only to find them fade away quickly?

Do you have the best intention to create a positive change but it just doesn't happen how you want or expect?

If you said 'yes' to one or all of the above then today's article is for you - 4 ways to know if you're grounded and how to plant strong roots for change. What is a root? How do you know you're rooted? Why is this important?

We all live in our heads. We're intellectual beings who crave rationality and for things to 'make sense'. Even those with devotional spiritual practices like to be able to connect the dots and have explanations for the things they believe in. This is why I chose the word 'faith' for 2015 - to help me cultivate a healthy relationship with not knowing but knowing in a totally new way.

When it comes to change of any kind we tackle it with rationality first - what's the plan? What's the strategy? Why did this happen this way? How do I logically approach this? There is nothing wrong with this approach. Strategy comes from our need to create predictable plans. We want change to happen within our comfort zone.

The trouble is - if you're not grounded it doesn't matter how much you plan. You can't plan your way into new change if that change has no place to root!

My favorite way to understand your root is to study the First Chakra: Root or Muladhara. Our Root Chakra is part of the Chakra System - the Chakra System are 7 wheels of energy in our body and spirit. They are a conduit or sort of highway for our life force to come down into this embodied being. The 7 energy centers are Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, and Crown. I will be diving into the Chakra System more and more in coming posts. If they peak your interest then you're in for a treat!

Your Root Chakra lives at the base of your spine and is our most Earth bound energy center. It is our very first right in this life - the right to exist. It is mostly concerned with safety and security - food, shelter, security, nurturing, connection, and love.

Imagine you have a vast root system that grounds you - this root system keeps you anchored to this body and life. All change is anchored in your Root Chakra.

Why?

Change by definition is unpredictable. It's taking what you know - even when that something doesn't serve you - and making it different. For example, if you're trying to find more balance, accomplish a new goal, find more happiness, etc. even though these are positive changes they are changes.

If you aren't grounded, or secure, then change just won't take root in your life. It's not safe enough for it to.

For today - here are 4 ways to know if you're grounded

1. You feel provided for - you trust yourself and your environment to meet your needs

2. You feel safe in the world

3. You are comfortable in your body

4. You are able to relax in your body and even be cared for

Energetic Self-Care 101

Energetic self care 101"work hard

burn out

recover

work hard

burn out

recover..."

Sound familiar? I was listening to this podcast last weekend with one of my very favorite artists, Kelly Rae Roberts, about her experience with creativity, restoration, and setting boundaries. It inspired me to write about Energetic Self-Care 101 today.

During her interview Kelly talks about the 'work hard, burn out, recover, do over' cycle. I think we all have done some version of this before. Have you ever pushed yourself to the point of exhaustion so that you had to take a break?

I've written extensively about how to work with and heal anxiety or overwhelm once it's already hit. Today I want to talk about Energetic Self-Care as a prevention practice.

First we need to define Energetic Self-Care:

"To create life through life-affirming practices. To re-establish a relationship with our emotional bodies. To change how we are is to change how we act. Move beyond thinking about taking care of yourself and start a practice that shapes, reshapes, and transforms how you actually are being."

- Richard Strozzi-Heckler

Energetic Self-Care is the practice of tuning in to your body, your needs, your stress and either putting some prevention in place for bigger symptoms like pain and burn out or healing them all together through your energy body.

We are all composed of energy. You can even feel your energy field if you slowly move your hands together - it takes on a beach ball like shape and will feel a bit restrictive to keep coming together. This is your energy field.

Everyday you exert energy through action, conversation, thoughts, and feelings and you renew energy through food, breath, self-awareness, and self-care. I am a firm believer that physical symptoms in the body not caused by a direct trauma or accident are created out of either a depletion or abundance of energy in the body and energy field.

Energetic Self-Care is about fine tuning that balance between depletion and abundance so that you feel restored, calm, present, and capable.

To get you started here are my favorite Energetic Self-Care Practices. The key word here is practice. Don't aim to master these but to cultivate space in your life for them.

Breath work

Intentional breathing is a restorative practice. Try 5 minutes of deep breathing with a focused awareness on the in-breath and out-breath from the belly. Try to move your breath deep into your belly and out of your chest or shoulders. Follow the breath in and out. This form of breathing also tells your limbic system responsible for fight/flight/freeze that you're safe.

Yoga

There are many forms of yoga you can try on, I suggest beginning with Vinyasa because of its fluid nature. Yoga can be complex. uncomfortable, and meditative all at the same time. I am very new to yoga but have quickly fallen in love with the way it gives me a space to be totally present with my body.

Strength Training

Strength training is my favorite way to feel empowered. If you are experiencing any kind of energetic depletion then strength training is a fast way to remind yourself and your body that you are capable of literal strength.

Walking & Hiking

Walking and hiking can be a great mindfulness practice or even a moving meditation. Carve out some time for a walk or hike without interruption like taking your phone with you. Just be present with your body, your breath, and your environment. Walking can be very re-centering if you're experiencing an onset of stress. Even 5 minutes can totally change your state of mind and energy.

Massage/BodyWork

Physical touch is healing and soothing. It also releases a strong hormone called oxytocin. If you don't have regular touch or intimacy in your life then massage or bodywork is highly recommended.

Meditation

Meditation in its simplest form is being present with what is. It doesn't have to be about emptying or reaching higher planes of existence. Just be with where you are. Notice your thoughts as coming and going without interacting with them. Become the observer and not the engager.

Cooking

Since we get our physical renewal from food, being mindful with cooking is a great energetic practice. Carve out space to try a new recipe or challenge yourself with something you've always wanted to cook. Invite friends over and share in a community around food.

Journal Writing

Journal writing can be so much more than a dump of thoughts. It can be a mindful interaction with the parts of ourselves we don't regularly converse with. Our needs and fears, our desires and dreams all have a voice in the journal. If you're experiencing an abundance of energy then journal writing can help funnel it somewhere. If you're experiencing a depletion of energy then the journal can give you sacred space to be heard and validated.

Art

Creativity of any kind is renewing for your energy body. Most of us tend to have very structured lives. We like to organize and plan because ultimately it gives us safety and security. But being creative can tap into a different kind of certainty - the kind that occurs when you go with the flow and trust in it. Give yourself free reign to be creative, no matter how silly!

Schedule your energetic self-care like you would any other appointment that services your health or well-being. I know scheduled self-care might seem a bit odd at first but then you know you're committed to practicing prevention. What's worked to help you restore your energy? Share by leaving a comment below!
