The importance of morning ritual

how to build a morning ritualThis week I will focus on ritual, self-care practices, and self-compassion. To kick this wonderful week off I offer you a quote by Barb Schmidt from her book, "The Practice" -

We are all capable of living a magnificent, purposeful, and happy life by tapping into the inner-peace and strength we have within us everyday.

Creating a practice or ritual in your life helps you carve out space to make this possible. Rituals are about building present moments of certainty in your life. As Pema Chodron said, "This very moment is the perfect teacher."

I have several rituals in my life but my most grounding is my morning ritual. I wake up a full hour before I need to face the day and spend that hour drinking tea, reading, writing, and meditating. I realize an hour is a lot of time but when you tend to everyone else's needs for 12 hours each day (sometimes more!) 1 hour is not that much at all.

There are many advantages of having a morning ritual but most of all this time has the power to totally ground your day. Your whole day is about noise. It's about reacting and responding to things outside of yourself - your family, your partner, your job, your phone, your email, and so on.

What of your inner-world? Your inner-world is the space that actually has to show up in all these different places, how do you nurture and restore your inner-world?

Life is completely unpredictable and all the thinking in the world is not going to give us the answers or comfort we're seeking...we end up using a great deal of energy trying to control the outside world. [Instead] Move away from observing the world and own your participation in what you observe. - Barb Schmidt

This is what a morning ritual gifts you - an inner-sanctuary from which you get to choose how to respond to the inevitability of uncertainty crammed into your day. 

Try a morning ritual for just 3 days and see what difference it makes in your life. You don't need to take an hour, start with just 15 minutes. You deserve at least 15 minutes.

Morning Ritual Ideas 

To help you try this on here are 4 morning ritual ideas based on the amount of time you have to yourself. Although you might enjoy spending this time with someone else make the intention to do your morning ritual in silence.

15 Minute Morning Ritual

With a shorter amount of time choose ONE of these activities and participate with it for the full 15 minutes. If you're weary of time then set a timer with a gentle chime.

  • Meditation
  • Journal Writing
  • Mindful Tea or Coffee drinking

30 Minute Morning Ritual

With a little more time you can choose 1-2 activities and create your own mini-pairing.

  • Meditation
  • Journal Writing
  • Mindful Tea or Coffee Drinking
  • Yoga or Stretching

60 Minute Morning Ritual

With a full hour you can completely submerge yourself in a mindful space for a nice amount of time. Still only choose 1-2 activities and give yourself expansive space to enjoy each activity.

  • Meditation
  • Journal Writing
  • Mindful Tea or Coffee Drinking
  • Yoga or Stretching
  • Walk
  • Reading

No amount of time is better than another. What IS important is the gift of self-care space. Also, try not to make breakfast or tend to any house chores at this time. I included drinking tea or coffee because I find the process of preparing it very soothing and something warm in the morning is such a comfort.
